DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men’s soccer head coach John Kerr welcomed a new Blue Devil to the squad recently as Micah Gaus signed with Duke after many years of being the Blue Devils’ most loyal fan. Gaus, a young cancer patient who was treated at Duke and the Triangle area hospitals, is a huge Duke fan and has been around the team since for the past few years.

Kerr calls Micah Duke’s biggest recruit as he has shown incredible strength, perseverance and a positive attitude throughout his illness, attributes coaches love to see in players. He’s been a dedicated Blue Devil fan as you can see him in the stands for every game that he can make.

Spearheaded by Duke sophomore goalkeeper Wade Clement, the Blue Devils thought it was in the team’s best interest to make him an official member of the duke soccer team.

“Micah and his family are an inspiration to each one of us,” said head coach John Kerr. “The strength and courage they all have shown over these past few years is incredible and I know we are a better team with them as a part of it. He’s an incredible young man from an outstanding family.”

Gaus originally was diagnosed March 7, 2010 with a softball sized tumor located in the fourth ventricle and brain stem. The tumor was partially resected after a 10-hour surgery on March 9, 2010 at Duke where he remained for radiation treatment for six more weeks. He was sent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C. on May 25, 2010 where he underwent rehabilitation to learn to walk, talk and move his mouth muscles to breathe again.

In May of 2012 after having many follow-up appointments, doctors found three additional tumors that were inoperable and in similar locations as the first diagnosis therefore cancelling the radiation option. Micah has been undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments regularly since then.

The Blue Devils look forward to spending even more time with Micah now that he’s an official member of the Duke squad.
