SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Duke women’s tennis team garnered a No. 10 preseason listing on the ITA Division I Team Rankings list, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Thursday. In addition to a No. 10 ranking, three Blue Devils appear in the top 50 on the singles poll and two doubles teams received rankings in the top 30.

The Blue Devils saw the greatest improvement of any ranked team on the ITA list, jumping four positions concluding the 2013 season ranked 14th overall. Duke earned the second-highest team ranking of all ACC opponents, behind only No. 3 North Carolina. Stanford received the first-place ranking, followed by No. 2 Florida, No. 4 Georgia, No. 5 UCLA and USC, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 8 California and No. 9 Miami.

Duke posted the third-most singles ranked players among ACC foes, behind only Virginia and Clemson, both with four players appearing on the list. Duke’s highest ranked singles player, sophomore Beatrice Capra, advanced considerably in the ITA poll, improving from a No. 27 ranking in 2013 to a No. 3 ranking for 2014. Capra’s third-place ranking is due in large part to a spectacular fall season. The Ellicott City, Md., native boasted a 15-2 fall ledger, including just one loss in 12 meetings against nationally-ranked opponents. Capra highlighted her fall season by earning both the ITA Carolina Regional Singles championship and the ITA National Singles Consolation title.

In addition to Capra, junior Ester Goldfeld ranks among the ITA’s top 50 singles players, appearing 45th overall. Goldfeld concluded the fall season with a 7-4 record and enters the dual-match season on a two-match win streak. Goldfeld recently won the USTA Shoot-Out championship after defeating teammate and senior Hanna Mar in the championship round. Mar, who rounds out the Duke contingent with a No. 49 ranking, enters the 2014 season after a 6-5 fall campaign. Mar looks to cap off a successful collegiate career, taking to the court for her final season in a Duke uniform with a 69-28 overall record.

In doubles play, the duo of junior Annie Mulholland and Goldfeld lead the Blue Devils with a No. 14 overall ranking, which places the pair fifth among ACC foes. Both players excelled in doubles action last season, with the pair earning a 6-2 ledger. The tandem also performed well when paired with teammates, combining for an overall record of 50-14.

In addition to teaming with Mulholland, Goldfeld also partners with senior Marianne Jodoin, with the two receiving a No. 27 ranking. Jodoin registered a 7-2 doubles record in the fall, including a 2-1 ledger while playing with Goldfeld. During the 2013 dual-match season, Jodoin earned a 21-8 doubles record.

The dual-match season opens Sunday, Jan. 12, as the Blue Devils welcome William & Mary to Durham, N.C.
