DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke women’s tennis team standout Ester Goldfeld received the first ACC Female Tennis Player of the Week honor of 2014, as announced by the conference Tuesday. Goldfeld helped the 10th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team defeat visiting 40th-ranked William & Mary, 6-1, Sunday, Jan. 12.

Goldfeld, a junior out of Brooklyn, N.Y., opened her 2014 season in doubles action, partnering with teammate Annie Mulholland.  The duo, currently ranked 14th among doubles pairs by the ITA, secured the first doubles point of the season for Duke after defeating William & Mary’s Maria Belaya and Leeza Nemchinov, 6-3. The victory set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Goldfeld returned to the courts in singles play, facing William & Mary’s 89th-ranked Nemchinov. Goldfeld, who currently ranks 44th on the ITA’s singles list, jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before taking the first set, 6-2. The second set opened in similar fashion, with Goldfeld taking a 4-1 lead before capturing the second set 6-2. Goldfeld’s win earned the Blue Devils their fifth point of the match.

Goldfeld and the Blue Devils next travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the Freeman Memorial Championship, Jan. 17-19.
