VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Duke freshman Joseph Lam placed 17th in Division I men’s foil, and senior Dylan Nollner took 47th in Division I men’s epee during the first two days of the January North American Cup.

Duke has two fencers remaining in the individual competition – junior Eugene Chung and sophomore Charles Copti, who will compete in the Division I men’s saber Sunday.

During Friday’s competition, Lam went 4-2 during the first round round-robin matchups and advanced to the round of 32 before falling, 15-14, to eventual 15th-place finisher Alex Chiang. The performance comes on the heels of Lam’s Duke debut the previous weekend at the Penn State duals when he posted a team-high nine wins in 14 bouts.

On Saturday, Nollner racked up five wins in six bouts during pool play and advanced to the round of 32 where he fell to 14th-seeded Ivan Zagoruiko, 7-6.

Two former Blue Devils also competed, as Ibtihaj Muhammad took ninth in Division I women’s saber and Zachary Moss placed 19th in Division I men’s epee.
