VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Duke freshman Christopher Monti placed 30th, sophomore Charles Copti placed 34th and junior Eugene Chung tied for 55th out of 168 entries in Division I men’s saber at the North American Cup Sunday.
Monti, who owns A ranking in all three weapons, picked up the saber Sunday and fenced his way to a 30th-place finish at the national event. He opened the competition with a 4-2 showing in the round-robin and then scored victories over Bartosz Pukal (15-11) and Alistair Delchamps (15-4). Delchamps entered the second round seeded 17th overall.
Copti’s 34th-place finish was Duke’s fourth top-50 performance of the weekend, as freshman Joseph Lam placed 17th in Division I men’s foil and senior Dylan Nollner took 47th in Division men’s epee. Both Copti and Chung far exceeded their seeding in the event, as Copti was seeded 81st and Chung 84th prior to Sunday’s start.
Copti went 5-1 in the opening-round round-robin with marquee wins over 16th-seeded Mihail Etropolski and 33rd-seeded Joe Pipkin. He opened the ensuing round of 128 with a 15-8 win against Eric Zhang before falling 15-10 in the round of 64 to eventual 16th-place finisher Benjamin Natanzon.
Chung opened Sunday with a 4-2 showing in the round-robin and edged Samuel Kwong in his second-round-opening bout, 15-13. His next bout came against eventual fifth-place finisher Andrew Mackiewicz, however, who won 15-8 en route to reaching the quarterfinals.
Duke returns to team competition Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25-26, at the Philadelphia Invitational. The Blue Devil men are 2-3 and the women 1-3 after the season-opening Penn State duals on Jan. 12 in University Park, Pa.
