Blue Devils Hit Road to Appalachian State Wednesday

DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University wrestling team hits the road for its first midweek dual of the campaign Wednesday, Jan. 22. The Blue Devils will make the trek north to Appalachian State for a 6:30 p.m., bout with the Mountaineers.

The match will feature live scoring through as well as live video. subscribers will be able to watch the match with their Duke Inside Access logins.

Duke looks to regain its winning ways after a pair of tough matches against No. 12 Virginia and No. 24 Stanford. The Blue Devils are 3-7 overall on the year with four of the losses coming to top 25 opponents. Appalachian State enters the contest with a 4-6 overall mark and is coming off of a 25-9 loss to The Citadel.

The two squads will be meeting for the 18th time overall with Appalachian State owning a 12-5 record over the Blue Devils. Duke defeated the Mountaineers 24-15 a season ago in Durham and has won two of the previous three duals.

The Blue Devils are led by 157-pounder Immanuel Kerr-Brown with a team-best 14-7 record and 7-3 mark in duals. He recently posted a win over No. 13 Blaise Butler of Virginia to improve to 3-2 against ranked foes and is just two wins shy of matching his duals wins mark from a season ago. Kerr-Brown posted a major decision versus Aaron Scott a year ago to help Duke to the victory.

At 197 pounds, Conner Hartmann is aiming to get back on track after two tough losses over the weekend. The redshirt sophomore is 11-6 overall with four of his six losses coming against top 20 wrestlers.

Redshirt freshman Jake Faust returns to the lineup at 149 pounds with an 8-4 overall record and 2-0 mark in duals with wins over Eastern Michigan and Buffalo. Trey Adamson, sporting and 11-7 record at 174 pounds, is in search of his seventh dual victory as he takes on redshirt sophomore Colin Hedash. He defeated the Mountaineer by major decision, 11-2, last season.   

Marcus Cain fills the 165-pound slot for the Blue Devils with a 6-9 record and a 2-6 mark in duals, while redshirt sophomore Dylan Ryan will be asked to bump up a couple of weight groups to wrestle at heavyweight.

The group of rookies Alex Elsea, Xaviel Ramos, Jacob Kasper and redshirt freshman Evan Botwin round out the lineup at 125, 141, 184 and 133, respectively.

Appalachian State enters the home bout with a 4-6 overall record and 3-1 mark at home. Dylan Cottrell is the Mountaineers’ top wrestler with a 20-1 mark at 149 pounds. His lone loss was against Northwestern’s Jason Tsirtsis at the Keystone Classic.

Also owning double-digit wins is Dominic Parisi at 125 (12-6), Zack Strickland (12-11) in the 165-pound class and heavyweight Denzel Dejournette (12-12). In addition, Hedash will be in search of win 15 when he takes on Adamson.

The Blue Devils resume their ACC schedule Friday with No. 17 Virginia Tech in Charlotte, N.C. The ACC foes will wrestle at Charlotte Latin School at 7:30 p.m.
