DURHAM, N.C. – A handful of Duke track and field members are set to compete this weekend at one of two meets, either traveling to State College, Pa., to participate in the Penn State National, or making the trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the JDL Fast Track competition. The individuals competing come off strong showings from last weekend at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C., where the Duke women’s track and field team won the Carolina Cup team competition and the men’s track and field team placed second behind only East Carolina.

In the field events, senior Justin Amezquita and sophomore Megan Clark both travel to Winston-Salem Saturday to compete in the pole vault at the JDL Fast Track competition. Amezquita looks to return to top form after the Mountainside, N.J., native cleared 17-5.75 (5.33) and set a school record in his season opener. Clark hopes to replicate similar early season success after the Fort Benning, Ga., native cleared 13-9.25 (4.20) to move herself into second on Duke’s all-time list. The pole vault is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Redshirt junior Michael Krone will also make the trip to Winston-Salem Saturday, competing in the high jump. Krone earned a second-place finish in his season opener at the Virginia Tech Invitational, posting a season-best mark of 6-10.75 (2.10). Krone, who currently owns a personal-best indoor high jump mark of 7-0.25 (2.13), is scheduled to compete at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Duke also sends a contingent of throwers to the JDL Fast Track competition Friday to compete in the shot put. Redshirt senior Michelle Anumba, senior Erica Brand, freshman Amarie Bremel and redshirt freshman Urina Harrell are all set to compete for the women, while redshirt junior Kyler Shumway and redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals are both slated to compete for the men. Boals carries momentum into Friday’s shot put after posting a personal-best mark of 58-1.25 (17.71) at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge last weekend. The effort ranks Boals second on Duke’s all-time list as well as third in the Southeast region. Anumba’s 48-8.75 (14.85) at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge last weekend ranks her eighth in the Southeast region heading into Friday’s competition.

Graduate student Juliet Bottorff enters her third 3,000 of the season as the Newark, Del., native joins a stacked field at the JDL Fast Track competition. In addition to Bottorff, a former NCAA champion at 10,000m, former Illinois standout Angela Bizzarri, an NCAA champion at 3,000, 5,000 and in cross country is also set to enter the race, along with a host of other competitors with impressive credentials. The 3,000 is scheduled for a 2:45 p.m. start Saturday.

Six members of the Duke women’s track and field team, including sophomores Anima Banks and Madison Granger, junior Abby Farley, graduate student Audrey Huth, junior Elizabeth Kerpon and freshman Haley Meier, all travel to State College, Pa., for the Penn State National. Friday night the foursome of Banks, Kerpon, Farley and Huth will compete in the distance medley relay. Duke’s women’s DMR currently ranks second among teams in the Southeast region. The following afternoon, Farley returns to the track for an open 800 at 3:35 p.m. Farley’s converted 800m time of 2:08.63 currently ranks her third in the Southeast region. Banks, Huth, Meier and Granger are all entered in the mile, which starts at 4 p.m., while Kerpon is slated to compete in the 200, set to begin at 4:20 p.m.
