DURHAM, N.C.—Playing in his first lacrosse game for Duke in nearly seven years, redshirt senior Casey Carroll captured 2014’s first Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor as announced by the conference.

Carroll, with 2,447 days separating the last time he donned a Blue Devil uniform, helped anchor Duke’s defense in a 16-10 season-opening win over Jacksonville. The veteran close defenseman corralled five ground balls and forced three turnovers as the No. 3 Blue Devils captured the program’s 492nd victory.

A native of Baldwin, N.Y., Carroll played his first game for Duke Feb. 28, 2004. He went on to earn USILA All-America honor able mention honors in 2005 before injuring his knee early in the 2006 campaign. As a senior in 2007, Carroll garnered first team All-America recognition while leading Duke to the national title game.

Upon graduation, Carroll elected to join the Army and served in the United States Army's 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment from 2007-12. After stints in both Afghanistan and Iraq, Carroll returned to the Blue Devils in 2012 before tearing his ACL in January of 2013.

Duke will face a tough test Saturday when No. 4 Denver comes to town. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
