DURHAM, N.C. – Facing its second top-five opponent in as many weeks, the sixth-ranked Blue Devils (3-1) return to Koskinen Stadium Saturday, March 1 to host No. 3 Maryland at 1 p.m. in the ACC opener for both schools.

Maryland Series History
Saturday’s contest marks the 27th all-time meeting between Duke and Maryland with the Terrapins leading the series, 17-9 ... The Blue Devils are 6-4 all-time against Maryland at home in Koskinen Stadium and 7-10 when facing the Terps in regular season action ... Maryland has won each of the last three meetings, including a 14-9 decision in the NCAA Quarterfinals last spring in College Park. 

Last Time We Met
Duke held top-seeded and top-ranked Maryland to five goals in the first 25 minutes of play but ultimately fell, 14-9, in the NCAA Quarterfinals May 18, 2013 in College Park ... Trailing 14-5 midway through the second half, the Blue Devils closed the contest with four answered scores, but were unable to erase the earlier deficit, finishing the season with a 14-6 ledger ... Netminder Kelsey Duryea matched a career-high with 15 saves in the loss ... Maddy Morrissey and Molly Quirke paced the attack with three goals each and Kerrin Maurer added four assists ... The Terrapins’ Alex Aust led all scorers with seven points (5g, 2a) ... For the game, the Terrapins outshot Duke, 34-18, and won the ground ball battle by a 19-8 margin ...The Blue Devils held the advantage at the draw, notching 16 draw controls to Maryland’s 10.

Scouting the Terrapins
Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Cathy Reese, Maryland enters the ACC opener with a 5-0 record after dispatching Hofstra Tuesday evening, 14-3, on the road ... The Terrapins are ranked third in the IWLCA poll and second by Inside Lacrosse this week ... Taylor Cummings leads the attack with 23 points (16g, 7a) while ACC co-Offensive Player of the Week Brooke Griffin has 19 points (15g, 4a) ... In goal, ACC Defensive Player of the Week Abbey Clipp owns a 5.14 goals against average and a .640 save percentage ... Defender Alice Mercer is tied for first in the ACC with 1.75 caused turnovers per contest ... Maryland’s defense has held five straight opponents to eight goals or fewer to start the 2014 campaign.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Sixth-ranked Duke (3-1, 0-0 ACC) faces its second top-five opponent in as many weeks in No. 3 Maryland ... The Blue Devils are coming off of a one-goal loss to No. 4 Northwestern ... Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer has paced the offense through the first four contests, notching 15 goals and 18 assists ... Senior Sydney Peterson has tallied 10 points (6g, 4a) since joining the starting lineup this season ... Returning All-American defender Taylor Virden leads the way in draw controls (13), ground balls (11) and caused turnovers (6) and is tied for second in the ACC with 2.75 ground balls per game ... Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, a second team All-America selection last spring, owns an 8.74 goals against average and a .503 save percentage in the net and ranks second in the conference with 7.75 saves per game ... Duke’s balanced attack is outscoring opponents by a 61-35 margin to start the season ... The Blue Devils currently lead the ACC in shot percentage with a .575 clip.

Last Time Out
Leading 9-7 with just under 22 minutes to play, Duke was unable to contain visiting Northwestern, falling by a score of 12-11 in a back-and-forth battle between two top-five teams Feb. 22 at Koskinen Stadium ... The fourth-ranked Wildcats used a 4-0 run late in the second half to secure the one-goal victory ... Six different Blue Devils scored during the opening half while Kerrin Maurer recorded a career-high three caused turnovers ... Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea posted nine saves against 27 shots by Northwestern in addition to picking up three ground balls ... Kaleigh Craig led the Wildcats with four goals and Alyssa Leonard added two to go along with 13 wins at the draw.

Scheduling the Best
Duke’s 2014 slate currently features eight teams ranked in the top 20 of the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll ... The Blue Devils began a tough stretch this weekend, falling short in a one-goal loss to No. 4 Northwestern before hosting No. 3 Maryland this week.

Against Ranked Opponents
Since the 2008 season, Duke is 41-38 against ranked teams ... The Blue Devils have lost just six times to teams outside the top-10 in the past five years ... The Blue Devils went 5-5 against ranked opponents in 2013 and fell just one goal short in their first test this spring against a top-five opponent last Saturday in a 12-11 loss to No. 4 Northwestern.

Trio Tabbed to Tewaaraton Watch List
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, junior attacker Kerrin Maurer and senior defender Taylor Virden were all named to the 2014 Tewaaraton Award watch list presented by Panama Jack, as announced Feb. 27 ... Maurer and Virden were both Tewaaraton Award nominees a year ago while Duryea made her first career appearance on the watch list ... Duke has had at least two players selected to the Tewaaraton Award watch list each season since the award’s inception in 2001 ... Former Blue Devil Katie Chrest earned the prestigious honor following the 2005 season.

Balanced Attack
Fifteen different Blue Devils have scored a goal and 12 players have notched at least one assist through four games this season ... Ten Blue Devils have recorded multiple-goal games, led by junior Kerrin Maurer, who owns two hat tricks ... In a 25-4 season-opening victory over Elon Feb. 7, 14 different Duke players found the back of the net with Maurer tallying a career-high six markers.

Kimel Tabs Experienced Lineup in 2014
Head coach Kerstin Kimel’s starting lineup includes eight upperclassmen, with seniors and juniors contributing all over the field ... Duke’s eight returning starters include juniors Kerrin Maurer and Brigid Smith and sophomore Kelci Smesko at attack, senior Maddy Morrissey and junior Taylor Trimble in the midfield and senior Taylor Virden, junior Gabby Moise and sophomore Kelsey Duryea on defense.

Virden, Duryea Among ACC Leaders
Returning IWLCA All-Americans Taylor Virden and Kelsey Duryea continue to anchor the defense in 2014 ... Virden averages 2.75 ground balls per game to tie for second in the ACC heading into this weekend ... Duryea ranks second among conference goalkeepers with 7.75 saves per game through the first four contests.

Home Sweet Home
The Blue Devils have been tough to beat at Koskinen Stadium in recent years ... From 2007-13, the program notched a 54-11 recorwhen playing at home, including 10-0 marks in 2007 and 2011 ... Duke is 2-1 at home this spring following last weekend’s one-goal loss to No. 4 Northwestern.

One-Goal Games
The Blue Devils are 29-31 all-time in games decided by one goal after falling to Northwestern, 12-11, last weekend ... Duke went 2-2 in one-goal games in 2013, cindluing a 10-9, double overtime victory over Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament ... Since 2010, the Blue Devils have played in 13 one-goal games, posting an 8-5 record in that span.

Maurer, Virden Moving Up Career Lists
Senior defender Taylor Virden and junior attacker Kerrin Maurer provide veteran experience at both ends of the field ... Maurer paces the Blue Devils in points, goals and assists this season and currently ranks eighth all-time career assists (67) and 17th in program history in career points (142) ... Maurer reached the 100-point barrier and topped the 50-assist milestone as a sophomore last season ... Virden leads the team in draw controls, ground balls and caused turnovers through four games in 2014 and ranks sixth all-time in career draw controls with 135 ... She is also approaching the 100-ground ball mark for her career with 93 over four seasons.

In the Month of March
Duke has played 123 games in March in program history ... The Blue Devils are 87-36 all-time during the month ... Duke last lost in March on March 28, 2013 in a 12-11 overtime loss to North Carolina in Durham.
