DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman forward Jabari Parker received the Swett-Baylin Most Valuable Player Award at the Duke men’s basketball program’s annual banquet and awards ceremony held Wednesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Parker is only the second Duke freshman under head coach Mike Krzyzewski to receive team MVP honors, joining Johnny Dawkins who earned the trophy outright in 1983. The award was one of two for Parker, who also earned the honor of Best Rebounding Average after a season that saw him receive consensus first team All-America and first team All-ACC honors as well as the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year and USBWA District III Player of the Year awards.

Parker was honored in front of his teammates, family, coaches, fans and friends of the program as part of the Duke basketball banquet that celebrated the team’s accomplishments from the 2013-14 season. The Blue Devils finished the year 26-9 overall and 13-5 in the ACC, reached the ACC Championship game and finished undefeated in Cameron Indoor Stadium for the second straight year. Duke was ranked No. 6 in the final Associated Press Poll and No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Key to Duke’s success this season were Parker, a unanimous first team All-America choice, and redshirt sophomore forward Rodney Hood, an All-ACC second team pick. Hood was honored with Duke’s Pagliuca Family Coach’s Award (Player Exemplifying Commitment and Values of Duke Basketball while Displaying Overall Improvement), Iron Dukes Award (Most Minutes) and Best Defensive Player Award.

Hood and seniors Josh Hairston and Tyler Thornton were also honored with the Bill Krzyzewski Captains’ Award. Thornton, a senior who started 25 games, was named winner of the Glenn E. “Ted” Mann Award for the second straight year as the player contributing most to team morale as well as the True Blue Award for leading Duke with 10 drawn charges.

Sophomore forward Amile Jefferson, who started 26 games and averaged 6.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, took home the Dr. Deryl Hart Award as Duke’s top scholar-athlete along with the Best Field Goal Percentage Award after leading Duke with a .644 (94-of-146) clip from the field.

Junior point guard Quinn Cook received the Best Free Throw Percentage Award for posting a .827 (67-of-81) mark from the charity stripe and the Most Assists Award for leading Duke with 153 assists and 4.4 per game. Cook also took home the assists award as a sophomore in 2012-13.

Receiving the Gopal Varadhan Senior Manager Award were Scott Lamson and Jamie Stark. Cheerleader Debbie Xie won the Harry Rainey Spirit Award (Outstanding Cheerleader), while Madeline Barrow was named recipient of the Charles Hogan Memorial Band Award.
