Women's Golf Receives No. 1 Seed in East Region

DURHAM, N.C. – The third-ranked Duke women’s golf team received its 22nd consecutive bid to participate in NCAA Regional action Monday as the Blue Devils were seeded No. 1 in the East Region and will next travel to Tallahassee, Fla., from May 8-10 to play for an invitation to the NCAA Championship.  The regional will be played at the 6,257-yard, par 72 SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.

Other teams competing in the East Region are South Carolina, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, Central Florida, Virginia, Auburn, NC State, Florida State, Kentucky, Tulane, Louisville, Baylor, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Campbell, East Carolina, Texas State, College of Charleston, Troy, Murray State, Seton Hall and Alabama State.  The following individuals will also be competing – Lori Beth Adams (UNC-Wilmington), Ellen Ceresko (Penn State), Lacey Fears (Mercer), Kaew Preamchuen (Kennesaw State), Abby Newton (Mississippi) and Christina Vosters (Penn State).

The regional will be a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day.  Duke will open action on Thursday, May 8 on hole No. 1 at 8:51 a.m., along with South Carolina and Stanford.  

The top three seeds in the Central Regional were UCLA, Arkansas and Alabama, while the top teams in the West Regional were Southern California, Arizona State and Oklahoma.

The top eight teams and top two individuals (not on one of those eight teams) advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 20-23 at the Tulsa Golf and Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.  The Blue Devils have won a total of five NCAA Championships over the last 15 years ---1999, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007, while coming off a second place ledger a year ago.

Duke is currently ranked No. 3 nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.  In the individual rankings, Blue Devil freshman Yu Liu (3), sophomore Celine Boutier (6), senior Laetitia Beck (10) and freshman Sandy Choi (91) are listed.

The Blue Devils registered a 27-stroke victory at the ACC Championship as a team to won its fourth tournament of the season.  The four tournament wins is the most for the Blue Devils since the 2007-08 campaign when Duke won five events.  Boutier won her third consecutive individual title and first ACC Championship, while three other Blue Devils finished in the top five –Beck (2), Choi (4) and Liu (T5).

Head coach Dan Brooks has now guided the Blue Devils to 118 career wins and 18 of Duke’s 19 ACC titles.  Brooks has led the Blue Devils to five NCAA Championships (1999, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007) and has taken his squad to the NCAA Regionals every year since 1993.  

Duke has won NCAA regional title in 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2013.
