DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Fred Saba and junior Jason Tahir will represent Duke at the 2014 NCAA Singles Championship May 21-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., as announced Wednesday by the NCAA.

Both Blue Devils received at-large bids to compete in the 64-player field. Saba will make his second consecutive appearance in the singles championship while Tahir will make his first appearance after earning an at-large bid to the doubles championship in 2013.

Duke has now had at least one player selected to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships for five consecutive seasons.

Ranked 36th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll, Saba enters NCAA Championship play with an overall ledger of 20-8, including a 9-2 mark in ACC play. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native compiled a 12-4 record at the No. 2 position in Duke’s lineup and defeated eight ranked opponents during the course of the season, posting wins against the 17th, 30th and 35th-ranked players in the country. Saba clinched a 4-2 victory over North Carolina during ITA Kick-Off Weekend that qualified Duke to the 2014 ITA National Team Indoor Championship and against Georgia Tech Apr. 13 became the 12th player in program history to reach the 100-win milestone for his career.

Tahir, the 30th-ranked player in the country, has guided the Blue Devils since moving to the top spot in the lineup earlier this season. A product of Rochester, N.Y., he has tallied a season record of 22-9 and went 8-3 against ACC opponents. He registered a 7-5 ledger at the No. 1 singles spot and totaled eight wins against ranked players, including victories over opponents ranked No. 10, No. 29, No. 36 and No. 39. Tahir earned a three-set decision on court one in the regular season meeting with North Carolina to seal a 5-2 win for the Blue Devils and secure the squad a second-place finish in the conference standings as well as the No. 2 seed in the ACC Championship.

The draws for the singles championship will be announced May 20.

As a team, Duke received the No. 11 overall seed in the 2014 NCAA Team Championship and was selected one of 16 regional host sites for first and second round play. The Blue Devils will open tournament action Saturday, May 10 at 12 p.m. against Winthrop, while Elon and Tennessee will also compete in the Durham Regional.
