CLEMSON, S.C. – Duke will move on to the Grand Final in all four events at the ACC Championship after clocking top-six overall times in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four on the first day of competition Friday on Lake Hartwell.

Racing in a two-day format at the conference championship for the first time in ACC history, Duke lined up in four-boat heats in those three races posted finishes of second in the varsity four (7:52.9) and third in the varsity eight (6:56.3) and second varsity eight (7:10.8). Virginia and Notre Dame, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, and racing in opposite heats in each event, combined to win all six races on the first day of competition, while the Cavaliers had the best times in all three events.

Duke’s varsity four set the tone early, storming past Clemson to finish more than 10 seconds ahead of the Tigers for second place in the heat in the day’s opening race. The Blue Devil crew of coxswain Karla Beltran and rowers Allison Beattie, Phoebe Donovan, Sophia Staal and Julie Rohde trailed only top-seeded and fifth-ranked Virginia, which logged a 7:39.8 for the event’s fastest time. Duke’s V4 will take the third lane in Saturday’s Grand Final.

Duke’s second varsity eight group of coxswain Simone Pitre and rowers Caroline Murphy, Tani O'Neill, Julia Bretz, Lauren Miranda, Emily Hyland, Patricia Kolman, Mary Wilson and Lauren Musso pulled out a 7:10.8 in the first 2V8 heat to place third ahead of North Carolina (7:16.7) and behind Virginia (6:42.4) and Clemson (7:06.2). Those nine Blue Devils will occupy the first lane in Saturday’s 2V8 Grand Final.

In the varsity eight, Duke’s top crew of coxswain Caroline Kiritsy and rowers Grace Cassidy, Claire Vannelli, Caroline Williams, Katie Dukovich, Alex Stonehill, Elizabeth Horne, Tara Dalton and Hannah Hewitt placed third in the first heat with a time of 6:56.3, breaking the seven-minute barrier for the third straight race dating back to the UVa Invite. The crew crossed the finish line nearly 20 seconds faster than fourth-place finisher North Carolina (7:15.1) and trailed Virginia (6:42.7) and Clemson (6:53.9). The Duke V8 will take the second lane in Saturday’s Grand Final.

Also racing on Saturday will be Duke’s 3V8 of coxswain Samantha Bowman and rowers Dana Lerro, Laura Rosas, Sophia Blair, Kathleen Lyons, Gabi Weiss, Jeanette Llorens, Caroline Willis and Nicole Antoine. That group did not compete Friday but will take the second lane and race as the No. 5 seed in Saturday’s 3V8 Grand Final.
