DURHAM, N.C. – The draws for the 2014 NCAA Individual Championships were released Tuesday, May 20, with two Blue Devils set to compete in the first round of singles play Wednesday, May 21 at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Senior Fred Saba and junior Jason Tahir both received at-large bids to compete in the 64-player field for singles. Saba was ranked 44th in the latest national rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association while Tahir came in at No. 32.
A 2014 All-ACC first team selection, Saba will begin play in the NCAA Singles Championship against Ray Sarmiento of Southern California Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Saba has played to a 20-9 record in singles this season with wins over eight ranked opponents, including No. 17 Ronnie Schneider of North Carolina. In a team victory over Georgia Tech Apr. 13, he became the 12th player in program history to reach the 100-win milestone for his career. Saba will be making his second consecutive appearance in the singles tournament.
Tahir drew a first-round meeting with Northwestern’s Raleigh Smith, and will take the courts Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in his first appearance in the singles championship. He joined Saba in receiving first team All-ACC recognition this spring and guided the Blue Devils after moving to the top spot in the singles lineup, compiling a 23-9 ledger for the season. Tahir defeated eight ranked opponents during the course of the year, posting notable victories over No. 10 Brayden Schnur of North Carolina and No. 29 Greg Andrews of Notre Dame.
