DURHAM, N.C. - The Washington Nationals selected Duke University senior right-hander Drew Van Orden in the fifth round (154 overall) of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft Friday.

Van Orden became the 24th Duke pitcher to be drafted and the first since Marcus Stroman was taken with the 22nd overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.

A native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Van Orden was sensational in his final season at Duke. He appeared in 15 games with 14 starts on the mound and registered career bests in ERA (3.19), innings pitched (87.1) and strikeouts (91). After moving into the Friday starter role at the beginning of the ACC season, he finished the year ranked 13th in the conference in opposing batting average (.219), 14th in innings pitched, sixth in strikeouts and seventh in strikeouts per game.

Van Orden garnered ACC Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing 8.0 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts in Duke’s 2-0 victory over then-No. 25 NC State, and took home Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors following a 12-strikeout performance versus then-No. 19 North Carolina. He concluded his collegiate career with his first career shutout, blanking Georgia Tech in Greensboro en route to ACC All-Tournament Team accolades.
