DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke women’s tennis head coach Jamie Ashworth recently announced the signing of Samantha Harris.

“We are looking forward to having Samantha join our team and become a part of the Duke family,” said Ashworth. “We love that she brings a wealth of international experience into our program and a commitment to improving. She is hungry to be a part of something bigger than herself and will be a tremendous addition both on and off the court. Her work ethic, determination and desire to improve are all traits that will allow her to be tremendously successful in our program. We cannot wait to have Samantha here on campus and begin working with her and helping her achieve all of her academic and tennis goals.”

A product of Melbourne, Australia, Harris joins the Blue Devils following a wealth of international playing experience. In 2010, Harris posted strong play competing against her Australian counterparts, winning the Optus 16s Australian Championships in Melbourne Park and placing second at the Optus 14s National Claycourt Championships at the George Alder Tennis Centre. Harris also placed second at the Sydney International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior International at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre in 2010.

Harris will infuse skilled doubles play into Duke’s lineup, as well, as evidenced by her most recent  pairing with Sally Peers. The duo captured the doubles title at a $10,000 professional circuit tournament in Caserta, Italy, and reached the doubles final of a $10,000 professional circuit tournament in Croatia in June.

The Harris family is no stranger to the game of tennis. Harris’s mother, Anne, competed as a professional for 12 years, from 1980 to 1992, as well as represented Australia in the 1988 Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea. Graeme, Harris’s father, in addition to competing as a member of the Middle Tennessee State men’s tennis team, also helped coach Harris’s mother following his college career. Andrew, Harris’s older brother, embraced the family game as well, currently competing for Oklahoma University’s men’s tennis program after winning the Junior Wimbledon and Junior French Open doubles prior to his college career in 2012. Although not a tennis player, Harris’s oldest sibling, Caterina, remains active, competing as a tri-athlete.

Harris will begin competing for the Blue Devils at the start of the 2014-15 campaign.
