DURHAM, N.C. -- The preseason Soccer America rankings were released Wednesday with Duke earning a No. 10 listing as the Blue Devils prepare to open the season Friday, Aug. 22 versus Ohio State.
Head coach Robbie Church and the Blue Devils return seven starters, while welcoming the No. 3 rated recruiting class in the nation, off its squad that advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight a year ago and totaled a 9-9-6 overall record.
The Blue Devils feature 11 different ranked teams on their 2014 slate – Florida State (2), Virginia (3), North Carolina (4), Virginia Tech (5), Stanford (6), Penn State (9), Notre Dame (11), Boston College (13), Wake Forest (14) West Virginia (16), South Carolina (25).
Taking the top slot in the poll was defending NCAA Champion UCLA, while Florida State, Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Florida, Stanford, Texas A&M, Penn State and Duke rounded out the top 10. Notre Dame, Marquette, Boston College, Wake Forest, Georgetown, West Virginia, BYU, Portland, UCF, Santa Clara, Wisconsin, Texas Tech, California, San Diego State and South Carolina rounded out the top 25.
The ACC led all conferences with eight teams ranked in the preseason listing, including five in the top 10.
In two exhibition contests, Duke defeated 25th-ranked South Carolina, 2-0, and UNC Wilmington, 1-0. Rookies Imani Dorsey and Casey Martinez added goals for Duke. The Blue Devils will open the regular season Friday, Aug. 22 at 5:00 p.m., versus Ohio State in Chapel Hill, N.C. It will be a part of the UNC Nike Classic at Fetzer Field.
