DURHAM, N.C.— Duke men’s soccer, unbeaten in exhibition play, closes out its preseason schedule against College of Charleston Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium and admission is free. The game will be the final part of New Devil’s Night for the Class of 2018.
The Blue Devils defeated No. 25 Old Dominion, 6-1, in the opening exhibition match and Radford 3-0 Tuesday night. Duke officially opens the season Aug. 29 in the John Rennie Nike Classic against Loyola Marymount at 7:30 p.m.
Duke welcomes 13 new faces to the program to join the 16 returners. The freshman class includes players from nine different states and two countries – Canada and Norway – and features a pair of players who recently captured the US Soccer Development Academy National title. Five rookies started in the opening two exhibitions.
College of Charleston, in its 40th season of soccer, finished 4-11-1 a year ago. Its roster features a young group of 23 freshmen and sophomores and only seven upperclassmen. The Cougars are under the direction of longtime head coach Ralph Lundy.
Senior Sean Davis headlines the squad as captain and a Top Drawer Soccer Best XI pick out of the midfield. He ranked second on the team in scoring a year ago and will quarterback the offense from the center midfield role. Senior Jake Butwin and junior Zach Mathers join Davis as captains for the 2014 campaign.
Duke will host nine home games during the year, including ACC matches against North Carolina and Notre Dame. Admission during regular season games is $5 for everyone age six and up. Five-and-under get in free.
