DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women’s lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel and the Blue Devil staff welcomed the addition of 12 freshmen to the program this fall ahead of the 2016 campaign. Midfielder Ella Bonafede comes to Duke from Bay Shore, N.Y.

Prior to Duke: Bonafede, who hails from the same high school as Duke All-American Kerrin Maurer (’15), guided St. Anthony’s to four straight CHSAA league titles. She was tabbed the CHSAA Championship MVP twice and garnered all-league honors her sophomore and senior seasons. Also an Under Armour All-American as an underclassman, Bonafede totaled 24 goals, 20 assists and 25 ground balls during her senior campaign.
What is your favorite lacrosse memory?
EB: My best lacrosse memory was winning the CHSAA championship as a senior for the 10th straight title in program history.
When did you start playing lacrosse?
EB: I started playing organized lacrosse in second grade. I started earlier than that with my three brothers, playing mini lax in the back yard.
Who has had the biggest impact on your life?
EB: My parents—they have always been there to support and guide me. They are the reason I am where I am today.
Why did you choose Duke?
EB: Duke has a balance of excellence in athletics and academics. The first time I visited I fell in love with the school and the program.
What are your goals for your collegiate career?
EB: To be the best player and teammate that I can be and to help my team win a national championship.

Pre-game ritual/superstition: I always wear the same headband - it’s my lucky one!
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Tennis
Hidden talent: I have a natural golf swing. I played on the Met PGA Juniors league when I was young.
What do you plan to major in? Undecided. I am interested in biology and English.
Best advice you’ve received: Life is 1 percent Inspiration and 99 percent Perspiration - work hard for your dreams.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I hope to have done a lot of traveling and I hope to be doing something that I am passionate about.
