Duke Beats Edinboro; Finishes 1-2 at Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. –Three Blue Devils went unbeaten in a trio of duals to lead the Blue Devils to a 1-2 record at the Pitt Duals Saturday. Duke defeated Edinboro and suffered narrow setbacks to host Pittsburgh and Harvard.

Connor Bass, Mitch Finesilver and Conner Hartmann each won his three matches on the day, while Jake Faust and Trey Adamson both finished 2-1. The Blue Devils, forfeiting a 125, fell behind in all three matches and rallied back each time for the victory or chance to win. Duke’s comebacks against Pitt and Harvard came up just short by respective 23-19 and 23-17 scores. Duke cruised past the Fighting Scots 30-15.

Duke opened the day with a hard-fought dual against No. 20 Pittsburgh. The Blue Devils, forfeiting at 125 pounds, fell behind 11-0 after two matches before winning the next three matches to go ahead 13-11.

The Finesilver duo picked up Duke’s first two victories with Zach Finesilver cruising past Nick Zanetta at 141 pounds 8-1 for his first ACC victory. Mitch, at 149, continued his winning ways with a commanding 14-1 major decision over Robert Lee to remain unbeaten in conference action.

Bass pushed the Blue Devils into the lead at 157 pounds, pinning Ronnie Garbinsky in the third period. Bass fell behind 6-0 in the first period before rallying back in the second to swing momentum in his favor as he got Garbinsky on his back for the fall with 23 seconds left in the period.

The Panthers rebounded with consecutive decisions at 165 and 174 to go back in front 17-13. Adamson did his part at 184, scoring an 11-7 decision over Zach Bruce to bring Duke within one, 17-16. Fifth-ranked Hartmann, after falling behind 2-0 off the bat, dispatched Nick Bonaccorsi 4-2 as the Blue Devils went back ahead 19-17 with one match remaining.

Needing just a decision to ice the victory, 20th-ranked Ryan Solomon iced the team victory with a second period pin of Duke’s Brendan Walsh at heavyweight.

The Blue Devils evened their record at the Pitt Duals with dominant 30-15 triumph over Edinboro. Duke scored bonus points in five bouts, including getting falls at 184 and 197 to ice the victory for the Blue Devils.

Duke trailed 9-0 after the first two matches, but won the next seven bouts to up its points total to 30. Included in the wins were first-period pins from Adamson and Hartmann, while Zach and Faust both registered major decisions.Mitch also posted a second straight win over a tough Pat Lugo, 4-1.

A tough start again foiled the Blue Devils against Harvard. The Crimson jumped out to a 14-0 lead after three matches. Mitch put Duke on the board with a technical fall at 149 pounds, while Bass and Faust garnered a decision and technical fall, respectively to pull the Blue Devils within one, 14-13.

The Crimson rebounded with consecutive decisions at 174 and 184 before Hartmann kept the Blue Devils within striking distance of a victory with a major decision. Trailing 20-17 heading into the heavyweight match, Harvard’s Nick Gajdzik ended Duke’s comeback hopes with a 3-2 decision for the 23-7 victory.
