DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce the signing of infielder Erikson Nichols. Nichols is currently a senior at Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, N.J., and is set to join the Blue Devils in the fall of 2016.
“Erikson Nichols is a Cal Ripken type middle infielder,” said Pollard. “He’s a 6-4, rangy shortstop with a ton of arm strength. In addition, Erikson is a great combination of student and athlete. He’s ranked No. 1 in his class and is really accomplished both on the field and in the classroom.”
A Perfect Game 2015 Underclass High Honorable Mention selection, Nichols is ranked among the top 500 national prospects in his class according to the organization. He is also rated the No. 83 shortstop in the country and No. 14 overall prospect in the state of New Jersey.
Nichols is one of 10 incoming Blue Devil recruits rated by Perfect Game as one of the top 500 prospects nationally in the class of 2016, joining Will Benson (No. 32), Chase Cheek (No. 130), Adam Laskey (149), Graeme Stinson (No. 183), Matt Mervis (No. 222), Coleman Williams (No. 227) and Cam Kovachik (No. 432), Chris Dutra (No. 500) and Bill Chillari (No. 500).
This past season, Nichols led Bergen Catholic to the 2015 NJSIAA North, Non-Public A semifinals. Nichols had a two-run single in the top of the third to help Bergen Catholic to a 9-5 victory over Delbarton and finished the game with three RBI. Nichols pulled in second team Big North Conference All-Division honors in each of his four years.
