Day Two of Freeman Memorial Comes to a Close

LAS VEGAS – Members of the 16th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team concluded day two of competition at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Saturday, posting a perfect 2-0 record in doubles play and a 3-4 mark in singles action.  

In doubles, the freshman duo of Kaitlyn McCarthy and Jessica Ho produced a 6-1 victory over UNLV’s Cristina Moroi and Anna Bogoslavets in the doubles consolation round, marking the pair’s first win of the season, while the tandem of juniors Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith moved to 2-1 on the season with a 6-2 win against UNLV’s Paola Artiga and Mercedes Lopez.

McCarthy, the 29th-ranked singles player in the country, returned to the courts for singles play, where she advanced to the semifinal round following a 6-2, 6-4 win over 51st-ranked Brianna Morgan of Florida. In the semifinal round, McCarthy suffered just the second loss of her college career after falling to sixth-ranked Hayley Carter of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Samantha Harris remained unbeaten in singles play on the weekend after downing UCLA’s Kristin Wiley, 6-1, 6-3 in an added singles match, improving her record to 3-1 on the season. Redshirt freshman Christina Makarova also picked up a win in her added singles contest, defeating Moroi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, her first singles win of the season.

Sophomore Rebecca Smaller, Ho and Scholl each suffered a loss during added singles play. Smaller fell in straight sets to Bogoslavets, 6-2, 6-2, while Ho dropped her contest against 56th-ranked Josie Kuhlman of Florida, 6-2, 6-2. Scholl, ranked 79th in the nation among singles players, was unable to pull out the win against 76th-ranked Jessica Failla of Southern California, falling, 6-2, 6-2.

Smith, competing in a consolation round of the singles draw, nearly took the first set against her opponent,Stanford’s Caroline Lampl, but ultimately registered a 7-6, 6-1 loss.

The final day of competition at the Freeman Memorial begins at 1 p.m. (ET) with doubles action.
