CARY, N.C. – Junior Nicolas Alvarez demonstrated his increasing comfort this fall, winning two more singles matches to advance to the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional semifinals and pairing with Nick Stachowiak in doubles to move to the quarterfinals. Joining Alvarez and Stachowiak in Monday’s doubles quarterfinals are sophomores Jason Lapidus and Vincent Lin.

Alvarez began his day with a comeback 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) triumph versus Yancy Dennis of South Carolina to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. There, Alvarez picked up his second triumph of the day with a long-lasting 7-6 (10), 6-4 victory versus Wake Forest’s Christian Seraphim. Alvarez was the No. 3 seed in the draw, and stands No. 14 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings, while Dennis was unseeded and Seraphim was the No. 13 seed.

On Monday in the semifinals, Alvarez takes on Wake Forest’s Skander Mansouri, the No. 1 seed in the draw, at 9 a.m. Mansouri checks in No. 7 in the preseason Oracle/ITA ledger.

Sophomore Catalin Mateas had his main draw run end with a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 setback to North Carolina’s Bo Boyden in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Duke went 2-0 as Alvarez and Stachowiak won and Lapidus and Lin advanced due to a walkover. Alvarez and Stachowiak, the No. 7 seed in the draw, came back for a 3-6, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (8) victory against UNC Asheville’s Henry Patten and Josh Swindler. The Blue Devil pair takes on Elon’s Salvador Mijares and Neal Port around 1 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals.

Lapidus and Lin received a spot in the quarterfinals after the withdraw of Furman’s Trevor Croyder and Clarke Wilson. Lapidus and Lin go up against East Carolina’s Ronny Georgi and Freddie McGeehan at 9 a.m. Monday.
