Duke Doubles Perfect in Day One of ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Stellar doubles play by members of the Duke women’s tennis team highlighted day one of the ITA Regional Championships Presented by Oracle in Chapel Hill, N.C. The second day of action begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow with the opening round of the main singles draw.

The Blue Devil pairing of junior Rebecca Smaller and redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova won back-to-back matches to reach the round of 16 in Chapel Hill. The duo began the day with an 8-6 victory over South Carolina’s Ali Mills and Hannah Templeton before downing Appalachian State’s Melissa Machado and Rebecca Morse, 8-2. The two wins moved Smaller and Makarova’s record to 3-2 on the year. Makarova and Smaller are slated to face Bianca Moldovan and Claudia Wiktorin of NC State Friday, with the match beginning at 11:30 a.m.

After receiving a bye in the first round of the doubles draw, freshman Meible Chi and senior Alyssa Smith began play in the second round, taking the court against Davidson’s duo of Gabrielle Centenari and Anne Catherine Feaster. In the match, Chi and Smith posted an impressive 8-4 win, advancing to the round of 16, where they will face South Carolina’s Silvia Chinellato and Ingrid Martins at 1 p.m.

The team of senior Chalena Scholl and sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy also used a first round bye to help propel them to the round of 16, after the duo defeated UNC Ashville’s Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley, 8-6, in second round play. Scholl and McCarthy will return to the doubles courts Friday at 12:30 p.m., taking on Elon’s Erica Braschi and Kirsten Ward.

The Duke tandem of junior Samantha Harris and sophomore Ellyse Hamlin also posted a win Thursday, defeating Wake Forest’s team of Sam Asch and Courtney Meredith, 8-5. The Blue Devil duo is slated to face Katarina Kozarov and Katty Weymouth of Furman Friday at 1 p.m.

Smaller opened the day with qualifying singles action, falling to Winthrop’s Alisa Soloveva, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round.

In addition to doubles, tomorrow marks the beginning of main draw singles play, with seven Blue Devils set to compete.

Makarova is scheduled to face Charlotte’s Tai Martin at 9 a.m., while Chi faces off against Presbyterian’s Celine Schepers at 9 a.m. Hamlin and Scholl will also take the singles courts at 9 a.m., competing against UNC-Greensboro’s Alice Taylor and NC State’s Adriana Reami, respectively. Harris is slated to begin singles play for the first time this fall, facing Wake Forest’s Chandler Carter at 10:15 a.m. McCarthy is also set for a 10:15 a.m. contest, facing Winthrop’s Soloveva, while Smith rounds out the contingent of Blue Devils competing with a match versus North Carolina’s Makenna Jones at 10:30 a.m.
