DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are thrilled to announce the signing of catcher Michael Rothenberg to a National Letter of Intent. Rothenberg is currently a senior at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and is set to join the Blue Devils in the fall of 2017.
Rothenberg is touted as a fundamentally sound switch-hitting catcher, earning three all-district citations during his career at Pine Crest, also the alma mater of current Blue Devils Zack Kone and Griffin Conine.
“Michael is a very polished, switch-hitting catcher,” said Pollard. “He has very advanced catch and throw skills as well as power from both sides of the plate. Michael has had the opportunity in his high school career in south Florida to catch a lot of high level arms. That experience will help him transition to ACC baseball.”
The All-Broward County selection also earned 2016 Perfect Game Underclass 2nd Team distinction this past spring after hitting .308 with three home runs and 12 RBI his junior season. Perfect Game also tabbed Rothenberg the No. 183 overall prospect and No. 19 catcher in the 2017 recruiting class as well as the No. 8 catcher and No. 42 overall prospect from the state of Florida.
Rothenberg is part of Duke’s nine-member 2017 signing class. GoDuke.com is set to release details on each of the Blue Devils’ 2017 recruiting class members over the coming weeks.
