DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are pleased to announce the signing of first baseman Chris Crabtree to a National Letter of Intent. Crabtree, currently a senior at Riverside High School in Durham, N.C., joins the Blue Devils in the fall of 2017.
At 6-4 and 220 pounds, the locally produced Crabtree adds a power-hitting left-handed bat to the Duke lineup.
“Chris is an extremely strong and powerful young man,” said Pollard. “He has the ability to be a plus power hitter from the left side of the plate. He’s also very, very good around the bag at first. His physical tools are advanced, but Chris also has tremendous intangibles. He’s a very tough, very competitive player.”
A 2016 Perfect Game Underclass 3rd Team selection, Crabtree is also a three-time all-conference pick at Riverside. This past season, he hit .409 as a junior with 27 RBI, five doubles, four triples and two home runs.
Perfect Game also rates Crabtree as a top 500 overall prospect in the 2017 recruiting class as well as the No. 19 first baseman in the country. The organization also lists Crabtree as the No. 26 overall prospect and top first baseman in the state of North Carolina.
A strong student, Crabtree is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society.
Crabtree is part of Duke’s 10-member 2017 signing class. GoDuke.com is set to release details on each of the Blue Devils’ 2017 recruiting class members over the coming weeks.
