LAS VEGAS — Members of the Duke women’s tennis team opened day one of the Freeman Memorial Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Friday, kicking off their final individual tournament before the start of 2016-17 dual match play. The three-day contest began with doubles, seeing a Duke duo advance into the second round of the tournament.

The pair of sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy and senior Chalena Scholl opened day one of competition with a 6-4 doubles victory, defeating Florida’s tandem of Brooke Austin and Spencer Liang. The result moved McCarthy and Scholl’s record as a team to 6-3 this season. McCarthy and Scholl are slated to face Stanford's Caroline Doyle and Melissa Lord tomorrow at 1 p.m. (ET).

The Duke pair of freshman Meible Chi and senior Alyssa Smith suffered a 6-4 setback in its first-round match with Pepperdine’s third-ranked duo of Christine Maddox and Mayar Sherif Ahmed. Chi and Smith will return to action Saturday, facing North Carolina’s Chloe Ouellet-Pizer and Rachael James-Baker in a consolation contest at 1 p.m. (ET).

Scholl, the 34th-ranked singles player in the country, returned to the courts for singles play, defeating James-Baker of North Carolina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The result moved Scholl’s record to 9-3 on the year. The Pompano Beach, Fla., native is slated to face UCLA’s Jada Hart Saturday at 2 p.m. (ET).

Chi, McCarthy and Smith also resumed action following doubles play, competing in first-round singles matches. Smith fell while facing UCLA’s fourth-ranked Ena Shibahara, 6-2, 6-3. Chi, the 14th-ranked singles player in the country, suffered just her fifth singles loss of the year, falling to UNLV’s 48th-ranked Carol Yang, 7-6, 7-6. McCarthy, ranked 76th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), also fell in her first singles match of the tournament, 6-2, 6-2, to Pepperdine’s 22nd-ranked Sherif Ahmed. The trio of Blue Devils is set to compete in back draw play Saturday, with McCarthy facing Stanford’s Taylor Davidson at 2 p.m. (ET), Chi competing against Stanford’s Doyle at 3 p.m. (ET) and Smith meeting North Carolina’s Ouellet-Pizer at 2 p.m. (ET).
