DURHAM, N.C. – For the second weekend in a row, the 10th-ranked Duke women’s fencing squad logged a perfect 5-0 record in front of their home crowd Sunday afternoon in Card Gymnasium. After four meets, the Blue Devil women hold a 15-8 (3-0 ACC) season record.
Duke picked up wins over MIT (22-5), Air Force (21-6), No. 8 Northwestern (18-9) and ACC foes Boston College (19-8) and North Carolina (14-13).
“Our team had an amazing weekend in front of our home crowd,” said head coach Alex Beguinet. “We did struggle a bit during our first two meets in Pennsylvania earlier in January but both the men and women went undefeated last weekend at the Eric Sollee Invitational and again this weekend at our annual meet. I think we’ve figured out what works best and we will continue to prepare for the ACC Championships in two weeks. Overall though, it was really a fantastic weekend!”
Senior captain Rita Somogyi led the epee squad to a stellar 5-0 showing as she logged 10 victories on the afternoon. Claudia Wrampelmeier and Camille Esnault hit the strips hard alongside Somogyi to collect nine wins each.
The saberists also performed well in Durham as they went 4-1. Jennifer Ling, Haley Fisher and Lindsay Sapienza all recorded 11-4 ledgers. Junior Fisher now holds a 46-18 record to lead the women while the 2016 ACC Champion Ling and former ACC Female Fencer of the Week Sapienza have recorded 43 wins apiece.
A number of Blue Devils will compete at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Kansas City, Mo., Feb. 17-20 before returning home Feb. 25-26 to host the ACC Championships in historic Cameron Indoor Stadium.
