PALOS VERDES, Calif. – Behind a three-under-par ledger by junior Leona Maguire, the Duke women’s golf team carded a three-over-par, 287, Sunday to open the 2017 spring campaign at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge played at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.

Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, enters the second round tied first overall along with Robynn Ree of Southern California at three-under-par.  Highlighted by her first collegiate hole-in-one from 119 yards on the 15th hole, Maguire collected five birdies to go along with an eagle to get to six-under-par through 13 holes and held a two-stroke lead at one point.  Maguire went on to suffer three bogeys over her final five holes to finish at three-under.

Over a span of eight holes Sunday, Maguire was six-under-par with four birdies, one eagle and two pars.  Her hole-in-one was with a pitching wedge from 119 yards that landed about a foot short of the pin and rolled into the cup.  She hit 11 fairways, 10 greens and rolled a career-best 24 putts.

Duke registered 12 birdies in round one and trail UCLA by seven strokes with 36 holes remaining.  UCLA jumped out to a hot start sitting at 10-under-par for a while, before falling back to four-under, 280, to close the round.  Southern California (285), Duke (287), Florida (290), UNLV (292), Arizona State (293), Arizona (293), Alabama (296), Oklahoma State (297) and California (297) rounded out the top 11 squads.

Freshman Ana Belac carded an even-par, 71, Sunday and currently sits tied 12th overall.  A native of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac rolled in 12 straight pars to open her day, before suffering her only bogey on the 205-yard, par three fourth.  After carding three more pars, Belac connected on a 12-foot birdie on the 147-yard, par three eighth hole to return to even par.  She closed the day with a par on the ninth hole.  Belac hit 13 greens, nine fairways and had 31 putts.  Belac’s 16 pars on the afternoon was tied for first in the field.

After opening with four bogeys over a span of her first five holes, sophomore Virginia Elena Carta settled down and played her final 13 holes at two-under-par.  Carta, a product of Udine, Italy, is tied 20th overall with a 73.  Her first birdie of the day came on 374-yard, par four 18th where she rolled in a six-foot birdie, before carding her second birdie on the 200-yard, par three second as she drained a 12-footer.  Carta sank a six-foot birdie on No. 6 to finish the day at two-over-par.

Gurbani Singh, from New Delhi, India, signed for a four-under-par, 75, in round one and is tied 43rd overall.  She collected two birdies on the afternoon and played the final five holes at one-under-par with a birdie on the 505-yard, par five fourth.

Junior Lisa Maguire struggled Sunday turning in an 82.
