HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Led by a bogey-free three-under-par, 68, Friday by Gurbani Singh, the Duke women’s golf team opened the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in second place at the 6,160-yeard, Par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

Singh, who hails from New Delhi, India, carded three birdies on her way to matching a season-best round of 68, which is tied for first overall, individually.  She is tied with Kristen Gillman of Alabama, Cheyenne Knight of Alabama and Sophia Zeeb in Arizona State.

As a team, Duke carded a two-over-par, 286, and trail Alabama by four strokes after the Tide signed for a two-under-par, 282.  Rounding out the top 12 teams are Arizona State (288), South Carolina (289), Baylor (291), Georgia (292), Tennessee (293), Vanderbilt (294), North Carolina (296), Oklahoma State (296), LSU (296) and Wake Forest (296).

After totaling seven straight pars to open play, Singh rolled in her first birdie of the day on the 158-yard, par three eighth hole from four feet.  She moved to two-under-par with another birdie on No. 9 and then went to three-under with a 14-foot birdie putt on No. 14.  Singh registered four up-and-downs for par during her round, including two early that were key to her start.  She had an up-and-down on No. 2 and then was 40 yards away on No. 4 and was able to hold on for par.  Singh hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and rolled 26 putts.

Leona Maguire, who is currently the No. 1 ranked collegiate golfer in the nation, opened the front nine with seven pars and bogeys on No. 6 and No. 7.  She made the turn at two-over-par and dropped to three-over with a bogey on the 13th hole.  Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, registered her first birdie of the day on the 520-yard, par five 15th as she was able to get up-and-down from 70 yards away.  She closed the day with another birdie on No. 18 by sinking a five-foot putt, after hitting a five-iron tight.  Maguire hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and had 29 putts on the day and is tied for 15th overall.

Junior Lisa Maguire matched a season-best 18-hole ledger with a two-over-par, 73, on Friday and will enter round two tied for 21st.  A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire opened the day with bogeys on No. 1 and No. 4, but quickly got back to even par with birdies on the fifth and seventh holes.  After a bogey on the eighth hole, Maguire would remain at one-over until she rolled in a birdie on the 374-yard, par four 14th.  Maguire stood at even par with three holes remaining, but suffered bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17 to close with a 73.  Her three birdies on the day matched a season best.  Maguire hit 11 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts on the day.

After missing the last tournament due to an illness, senior Sandy Choi returned to action and carded a two-over, 73, on day one.  Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, collected 10 consecutive pars to kick off her day.  She then had bogeys on No. 11 and No. 15, before sticking her three-wood to within 15 feet and sinking the birdie putt on the 384-yard, par four 16th.  Choi closed the day with a bogey, while hitting 14 fairways, 14 greens and rolling 33 putts.

Freshman Ana Belac featured a tough opening hole with a triple-bogey, but regrouped and played the next 17 holes at one-over-par.  Belac, a native of Portoroz, Slovenia, had birdies on No. 6 and No. 10 on the day on her way to finishing with a 75, which is tied 44th.  She hit 13 greens, 10 fairways and registered 32 putts.

Duke will kick off round two beginning at 10:10 a.m., along with Alabama and Arizona State.  Fans can follow the action with live scoring available via www.GolfStat.com.
