GREENSBORO, N.C. – After recording the highest ranked win of his career and remaining unbeaten in dual matches, Duke men’s tennis freshman Nick Stachowiak was named the ACC Player of the Week. It is the first league weekly honor of his career.
On Saturday, Stachowiak picked up singles and doubles victories to help Duke open the ACC season with a 6-1 win at Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils have won five straight matches overall to improve to 8-3.
Stachowiak earned the highest ranked win of his career, topping No. 49 Jai Corbett 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 on court one. The win was Stachowiak’s 14th straight, the longest streak by a Blue Devil since TJ Pura’s run of 14 consecutive victories from November 1, 2013 - April 25, 2014. Stachowiak’s 11 consecutive dual match triumphs are the most by a Duke rookie since Henrique Cunha ripped off 24 consecutive from February 5 – May 29, 2010.
On Saturday, the first set was even at points one through four before Stachowiak won the final two games. The second set had Corbett take 3-1 and 4-2 leads. Stachowiak got it down to 4-3, but Corbett won two of the last three games to force a third set. There, Stachowiak trailed 2-0 and 3-1 before winning consecutive games to even the set at 3-3. The action was tied at 4-4 and 5-5 before Stachowiak held and broke for the win. Stachowiak is 25-4 overall, 11-0 in dual matches and 2-0 on court one.
Stachowiak and doubles partner Spencer Furman clinched the doubles point, defeating Abraham Asaba and Corbett 6-4 on court one. Stachowiak and Furman trailed 3-2 before going on a three-game run to take a 5-3 advantage. The Virginia Tech pair got a game back but could not even the match. Stachowiak and Furman up their overall record to 13-0 and are 8-0 in dual matches. The 13-match winning streak is the longest for a Duke pair since Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler won 16 straight from March 5 - May 16, 2013.
Duke returns to action Tuesday at No. 6 North Carolina. First serve in Chapel Hill is set for 3 p.m.
