Moretti Qualifies for NCAAs in One-Meter Diving

AUBURN, Ala. – Sophomore Evan Moretti earned the right to represent Duke at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season after securing his spot at the national meet Monday at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships. Moretti kicked off the three-day meet by punching his ticket to nationals in the one-meter springboard event.

An honorable mention All-American on the three-meter springboard as a freshman last season, Moretti qualified for NCAAs with an eighth-place finish in Monday’s one-meter competition. He advanced to the event final with 308.65 points in the preliminary round, and added an additional 332.15 points in finals for a total score of 640.80.

Moretti’s highest scoring dive of the day came in the third round of finals, when he garnered an award of 66.65 on an inward 2 ½ somersault that moved him from 10th to eighth place. He dipped to 10th again after round five but responded with 65.60 points on his final effort, a forward 2 ½ somersault with one twist for a 3.2 degree of difficulty, to lock up a bid to the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Josh Owsiany joined Moretti in the one-meter final after collecting a top-18 finish in the event preliminaries for the second-straight year. Owsiany amassed 291.40 points in preliminaries and went on to finish the afternoon with a combined score of 587.25 to take 14th.

Freshman Nathaniel Hernandez also competed on the one-meter board, tying for 19th in preliminaries (279.50).

Two Blue Devils reached event finals Monday in women’s three-meter springboard diving. Senior Kirby Quinn totaled 299.40 points in preliminaries to earn a finals spot in seventh, while sophomore Mackenzie Willborn was 10th in preliminaries with a score of 291.55 points. Willborn topped the 50-point mark twice in the event finals, completing her list with a combined score of 574.70 for 12th overall. Quinn finished 18th at 527.80.

The women’s three-meter preliminaries saw sophomore Lizzie Fitzpatrick place 24th (265.85) and freshman Jaina Gaudette 37th (220.35).

Tuesday’s events at Auburn feature preliminaries and finals of the women’s one-meter and men’s three-meter springboard competitions. In Zone B, 10 spots are up for grabs in the women’s one-meter event and 10 in men’s three-meter diving. Action begins at 11 a.m. with live results available on
