DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke rowing team will begin its spring season Saturday with an exhibition at Clemson as part of the Carolina Cup. The Blue Devils will take on North Carolina and the host Tigers as part of the event.

Action begins at 8:30 a.m. as the boats will cover the 2,000-meter course on Lake Hartwell.

The Blue Devils took part in last year’s Carolina Cup, winning four races: V8, 2V8, V4 and exhibition 3V4. Duke finished second overall to Clemson, just one point behind the Tigers at 90-89.

"This is a good opportunity for our team, now that we’ve put in all the miles and work all winter break, to see what kind of team we want to be this spring,” head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno said. “It’s a good opportunity to race some good teams, but also to race ourselves. We’re going to see what times we’re going to throw out there and who we want to be this year.”

The Blue Devils last competed November 13 at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va. In Virginia, Duke turned in a pair of second-place finishes from its top two boats and three more top-eight performances. In the V8 race, the Blue Devils took second to Virginia’s crew with a time of 13:20.1 in the 19-boat race. Duke’s V4 boat also placed second, completing the course in 14:52.7.

Duke will return to Clemson and Lake Hartwell twice more this season, for the Clemson Invite on April 22-23 and ACC Championship on May 14.

“Anytime we race on a course that we also race on for the ACC Championship on, that's a really good opportunity for us,” Cooke Carcagno added. “We want to make that our second home, get really familiar there and get all our landmarks. The last time we raced there, it was a really good day for us. We’re hoping to pick up where we left off.”

After this weekend’s action, the Blue Devils will open the regular season Saturday, March 25, in Austin, Texas, for the Longhorn Invite.
