AUSTIN, Texas – In its first event of the regular season, the No. 14 Duke rowing team competed in eight races at the Longhorn Invite at Walter E. Long Lake and came home with one A finals title, by the 2V4. The Blue Devils competed against seven opponents as part of the event with No. 8 Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon State, UCF, Iowa, Oklahoma and San Diego.

"I think we were able to learn some things today about us that we will use over the next few weeks," head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno said. "There were some really good moments, but I think we have more in ourselves. I'm excited to get to work over the next two weeks and watch as our team takes another step forward."

During the morning session, the Blue Devils’ V8, 2V8 and V4 faced Iowa, Oklahoma and San Diego while the 2V4 went against Iowa, Oklahoma and UCF. In the opening race, the V8 took third in 6:19.405, finishing behind Iowa (6:11.509) and San Diego (6:14.171). The 2V8 answered with a win in its heat, clocking out in 6:16.643 to just inch past Iowa (6:16.674) and place ahead of Oklahoma (6:29.430) and San Diego (6:33.204).

The fours rounded out the morning with a pair of second-place finishes to Iowa. The V4 had a 7:09.216 mark to Iowa’s 7:01.438 while the Blue Devil 2V4 hit the end in 7:15.973 to Iowa’s 7:11.236. Duke’s 2V4 was third at the 1,000-meter mark (3:35.5), nearly two full seconds behind Oklahoma (3:33.8), but burst past the Sooners over the final 1,000 meters to place second, more than three full seconds ahead of OU (7:19.325).

The placements for the afternoon finals were determined by NCAA scoring. The invitational took V8, 2V8 and V4 scores from the morning and placed all three boats in same final. The Blue Devils claimed second in flight B with 12 points, behind Iowa’s eight but ahead of San Diego’s 18 and Oklahoma’s 21. Iowa and Duke advanced to the A finals with Texas and UCF, who were the top two finishers in flight A.

Duke’s 2V4 time from the morning also pushed it into the A finals. The 2V4 was first up in the afternoon session for Duke and it claimed the title with a time of 7:19.749 to beat out Texas (7:21.428), Notre Dame (7:23.312) and Iowa (7:24.261). The Blue Devils held the lead at the 1,000-meter mark and held off a hard-charging Texas squad for the championship.

The Blue Devils’ V4 finished third in its A final, ending in 7:23.333 to place behind Texas (7:02.781) and Iowa (7:13.371), but ahead of UCF (7:28.769).

The third race of the afternoon had Duke’s 2V8 taking third with a time of 6:31.665. The Blue Devil crew finished behind Texas (6:15.451) and Iowa (6:24.768) and ahead of UCF (6:44.013).
