BATON ROUGE, La. – The Duke women’s golf team featured an excellent day Friday jumping out to the team and individual leads at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic as the field played 36 holes at the 6,247-yard, par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.

Duke collected rounds of 285 and 286 for a five-under-par, 571, and leads by 13 strokes over Oklahoma State (584).  Rounding out the top 10 teams are Arkansas (584), NC State (588), SMU (595), Denver (595), Washington (599), Clemson (602), UNC Wilmington (602) and Kansas (604).

Blue Devil junior Leona Maguire carded a five-under-par, 67, in round one to take the individual lead and then fired a four-under-par, 68, in round two and holds a five-stroke lead with a nine-under-par, 135.  Teammate Virginia Elena Carta and Washington’s Julianne Alvarez are tied second with a four-under, 140.

Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, registered nine birdies and 24 pars in her opening 36 holes and turned in the tied for second-lowest 36-hole ledger in school history on a par 72 course (135).

After opening the tournament with a bogey, Maguire went on to go 25 straight bogey-free holes, which included eight birdies and an eagle.  Maguire registered birdies on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 8 to get to two-under-par.  She added birdies on the 10th, 15th and 17th to finish the first round at five-under, 65.  Maguire hit 11 fairways, 16 greens and lined up 28 putts.

The second round was much like the first for Maguire as she notched a birdie on No. 3 and then holed a 15-yard greenside bunker shot on the 478-yard, par five sixth for her third eagle of the season.  She added another birdie on No. 8 to get to four-under.  Her lone bogey of the second round came on the ninth hole, before closing the back nine with eight pars and a birdie on the 448-yard, par five 14th.  Maguire hit 16 greens, 13 fairways and had 30 putts in round two.

If Maguire can hold on Sunday for the win, it would give her six collegiate victories in three years with the Blue Devils.  The six wins would equal Brittany Lang and Lindy Duncan on Duke’s all-time charts.

Seeing action in her second tournament since having her tonsils removed, Carta turned in one-over, 73, in round one and then closed with a season-best five-under-par, 67, to jump from 13th place to tied second with a four-under, 140.

In round one, Carta opened play on hole No. 3 and reached the green in two, before two-putting for birdie.  She went on to suffer bogeys on No. 5, No. 10 and No. 14 to drop to two-over.  She closed strong with a birdie on the 378-yard, par four 17th as she hit her approach tight to within one foot and connected on the putt.  Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, hit 10 fairways, 13 greens and had 34 putts in round one.

Once again opening her round on the third hole, Carta kicked off action with a par and bogey on the first two holes.  She then reeled off back-to-back birdies as she rolled in a one-foot birdie on No. 5 and two-putted for birdie on No. 6 to get to one-under.  On the 402-yard, par four 10th, Carta connected on a 10-foot birdie, but suffered a bogey on No. 11.  She would move to three-under-par for the day after her second eagle of the season on the par five 14th as she sank 20-foot putt.  She continued her hot play with back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to get to five-under for the day.  With two holes remaining, Carta had a par on No. 1 and missed a four-foot birdie putt on No. 2 to finish with a 67.  She tied a season high with 17 greens, hit 12 fairways and had 33 putts.

After opening the day at tied fourth overall with a one-under, 71, junior Gurbani Singh had a 76 in round two and is tied 13th overall with a 147.  Singh, a product of New Delhi, India, had a par on her first hole, but then added two straight bogeys to drop to two-over early in round one.  She went on to play the next 15 holes in round one at three-under-par on her way to finishing with a 71.  Singh hit 13 greens, 11 fairways and had 32 putts.

Singh continued her hot play into round two with birdies on No. 2 and No. 3.  Over a span of 17 holes between round one and two, Singh held a four-under-par ledger.  She closed the day with a wild back nine.  Singh featured one par, five bogeys, two birdies and one double-bogey as she finished with a 76.

Freshman Ana Belac signed for rounds of 78 and 75 Friday and is tied 44th with a nine-over, 153.  Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, collected three birdies in round one as she hit 12 greens, nine fairways and had 33 putts.  In round two, she added two birdies.  Belac hit 15 greens, 14 fairways and added tied a season high with 35 putts.

Lone senior Sandy Choi had an eventful opening nine holes as she suffered a double-bogey on hole No. 3, but came back to collect her first double-eagle of her collegiate career on the 475-yard, par five seventh hole.  Choi, a product of Seoul, South Korea, was 250 yards away and hit a 3-wood.  The ball landed, rolled up to the green, hit a LSU golfers clubs and went into the hole.  She added four bogeys and a birdie on No. 9 on her way to finishing with a two-over, 74, in round one.  Choi hit 11 greens, nine fairways and had 32 putts.

In round two, Choi couldn’t get things going and struggled with a season-worst round of 81.  She hit 12 fairways, 10 greens and had a season-high 37 putts.  Choi is tied 53rd with a 155.

Junior Lisa Maguire, who is playing as an individual, posted rounds of 81 and 77 and is tied for 65th.  She notched two birdies in both rounds.

Due to incoming inclement weather, no golf will be played Saturday and the final round will kick off Sunday, March 26 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.  Follow the action with live scoring via www.GolfStat.com
