BATON ROUGE, La. – For the sixth time as a collegiate golfer and the second time this season, Duke University’s Leona Maguire claimed medalist honors as the junior carded a season-best 10-under-par, 206, at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic 6,247-yard, par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.  As a team, the Blue Devils won the team title for the second straight season with 10-under-par, 854.  

Maguire collected the wire-to-wire victory with rounds of 67, 68 and 71, which was four shots better than teammate Virginia Elena Carta (210).  A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire’s six wins at Duke now ranks tied fifth on the all-time charts along with Brittany Lang and Lindy Duncan.  Maguire led the field in par five scoring (seven-under, 4.42) and par four scoring (five-under, 3.83).

“It was great to finish our regular season with a win,” said Maguire.  “Hopefully we can build on our performance this week and take some good momentum into ACCs.”

In the final round, Maguire jumped out to another strong start as she stuck her approach shot to within one foot for birdie on No. 2.  After a bogey on No. 5, Maguire connected on three birdies over a five-hole stretch on the back nine to move to three-under.  On the 144-yard, par three 16th, Maguire hit her tee shot into the water and suffered a double-bogey.  She would go on to par the final two holes to finish with a one-under-par, 71.  Maguire now owns 14 rounds of even or under par on the season, after hitting 14 greens, 12 fairways and rolling 29 putts.  

As a team, Duke collected its second win of the season with rounds of 285, 286 and 283.  Oklahoma State (872), Arkansas (873), NC State (880) and Denver (880) closed out the top five teams.  

Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, got into her groove over the weekend and turned in a season-best six-under-par, 210, with rounds of 73, 67 and 70.  Her second place finish was also the best for her sophomore campaign.  Carta was hitting it close all day and had many birdie chances.  She opened the morning with a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 1 and sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the second hole to quickly get to two-under.  

On the 478-yard, par five sixth, Carta was on in two and two-putted for birdie to back to two-under for the day.  She narrowly missed birdie chances on seven and eight, before connecting on her fourth birdie of the round on No. 12 as she drained a three-footer.  After her birdie on No. 12, she moved to within three strokes behind Maguire, but couldn’t get any closer. Carta closed with five pars and a bogey on No. 14 to finish with a two-under, 70.    The reigning NCAA Champion, Carta hit 14 greens, 12 fairways and had 32 putts.  

The tournament featured only three golfers in the red numbers and the Blue Devils had two of them with Maguire and Carta.  

Junior Gurbani Singh placed in the top 20 for the third straight tournament with rounds of 71, 76 and 73, which was four-over-par (220).  Singh, who is from New Delhi, India, had her putter going early as she rolled in a 15-foot birdie on No. 2 to get into red numbers.  After a bogey on No. 4, she would remain even par through the first 11 holes.  Singh suffered a double-bogey on the 12th hole, but came back to sink a short birdie on the par five 14th.  She had a bogey on 15 and then birdied 18 with a five-footer as she finished with a 73.  Singh registered hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and turned in 35 putts.  

Boosted by her first collegiate round in the 60s, freshman Ana Belac finished strong as she placed tied 22nd with a six-over, 222.  A product of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac totaled four birdies and only one bogey over 18 holes Sunday to finish with a 69.  After starting her round on the second hole, Belac had a birdie on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 7.  She went on to play the final 11 holes at three-under-par with birdies on No. 9, No. 13 and No. 14.  Belac featured a tap-in birdie on No. 13 and just missed a 10-footer for eagle on No. 14 on her way to tapping in another birdie.  She hit a team-best 15 greens, 11 fairways and adding 30 putts.  

Senior Sandy Choi went on to place tied 47th with rounds of 74, 81 and 75 for a 230.  She hit 12 greens, 13 fairways and had 32 putts in the final round as she collected two birdies.  A native of Seoul, South Korea, finished strong with a one-under-par score over her final eight holes.

Playing as an individual, junior Lisa Maguire had her best round of the weekend Sunday with a three-over, 75.  Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, played her final 14 holes at even par with two birdies and her first collegiate eagle on the 448-yard, par five 14th.  She hit her rescue club from 200 yards onto the green.  Maguire then drained a 35-foot putt for eagle.  On the day, she had 30 putts, hit eight fairways and eight greens.

The Blue Devils will next compete against Northwestern in match play action Sunday, April 2 in Durham, N.C., prior to heading to the ACC Championship April 13-15 in Pawley’s Island, S.C.
