Blue Devils Primed for April North American Cup

BALTIMORE, Md. – With the 2017 NCAA season complete, six Blue Devils are set to compete at this weekend’s North American Cup (NAC) in Baltimore, Md., April 21-24. Junior Jan Maceczek and freshman Eoin Gronningsater will participate in the Division I Men’s Foil event, while rookies Lindsay Sapienza and Ben Stone will fence in Division I Women’s and Men’s Saber, respectively. Sophomore Bryn Hammarberg and freshman Zuzu Tang will serve as the lone Blue Devils in Division I Men’s Epee and Div. I Women’s Foil.

Stone will kick off competition with Division I Men’s Saber slated to begin Friday, April 21 at 8 a.m. Stone enters the weekend ranked 28th out of 63 participants and will be his first competition since the December NAC.

Competition will continue Saturday with Tang in Division I Women’s Foil and Tang is coming off an impressive rookie season as the Blue Devils’ top women’s foilist, compiling a 40-24 ledger. Tang finished ninth at the ACC Championships and 17th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, and enters competition tabbed 23rd.

All-American Hammarberg will hit the strips Sunday in Division I Men’s Epee in hopes of continuing his successful 2017 campaign ranked No. 51. The sophomore led the epeeists with a 38-24 record and collected bronze at the ACC Championships in February.

Also competing Sunday is No. 20 Sapienza in Division I Women’s Saber. Sapienza was part of the stellar women’s saber trio and posted a 52-21 ledger as a freshman, as well as garnering silver at the ACC Championships.

Maceczek and Gronningsater will round out Duke’s time in Baltimore on Monday in Division I Men’s Foil. Gronningsater led the foil squad with a 43-9 ledger while securing a spot on the podium at the ACC Championships and earned the 11th seed out of 74 this weekend. Maceczek is the No. 37 seed respectively with his 34-17 season record.

Duke will also be represented this weekend by former Blue Devil and current volunteer assistant coach Leslie Marx. Marx will compete in the Vet-50 Women’s Epee Sunday at 1 p.m. as the No. 10 seed.
