CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 19 Duke rowing team took on a stacked field Sunday at the Clemson Invitational, racing in three A Finals and two B Finals, with the Blue Devils earning a seventh place overall finish for the two-day event at Lake Hartwell.
Duke’s V8 and 3V8 were B Final racers while the 2V8, V4 and 2V4 represented the Blue Devils in the top final. The invitational is one of the top regattas in the country during the regular season as nine of the 21 squads in the event were ranked in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association national poll. Texas won the event with 130 total points, edging past Ohio State’s 125.
Duke’s V8 started the day with a third-place finish in the B Final. The top four boats in the race were separated by just more than one second. The Blue Devils crossed the line in 6:34.468 to trail UCLA (6:33.454) and UCF (6:34.350) and hold off Oklahoma (6:34.525).
The Blue Devils’ 2V8 had the first A Final of the day and placed fifth with a time of 6:44.582. The Blue Devils trailed four top-15 teams with No. 5 Texas (6:36.489), No. 11 Wisconsin (6:38.934), No. 4 Ohio State (6:42.267) and No. 10 Virginia (6:43.664). Duke eased past No. 15 Syracuse (6:47.842) and No. 20 Indiana (6:49.889).
Rowing in the second A Final was the V4, which pushed to a sixth-place showing in 7:32.920. The Buckeyes came out on top (7:18.540) with the Badgers just behind (7:19.095) and the Longhorns in a close third-place showing (7:20.750). The next three boats represented the ACC with the Cavaliers fourth (7:24.217), No. 18 Louisville (7:28.373) in fifth and Duke sixth. Oklahoma rounded out the race in 7:35.803.
Competing in the last A Final was Duke’s 2V4 as it placed third in 7:45.085, trailing Ohio State (7:31.100) and Texas (7:38.664). The Blue Devils narrowly edged out ACC rival Virginia(7:45.448).
Wrapping up the day was Duke’s 3V8 with and fifth in the B Final, crossing the line in 7:41.270. Virginia’s B boat won the race in 7:23.825 with Oklahoma (7:25.823), No. 14 Washington State (7:36.988) and Minnesota (7:40.796) rounding out the top four.
Duke is back in action Saturday for the conclusion of the regular season, in Bloomington, Ind., for the Dale England Cup.
