BETHPAGE, N.Y. –Duke junior attackman Justin Guterding tallied a game-high seven points from three goals and four assists to headline a convincing 18-8 victory for the sixth-ranked Blue Devils over No. 20 Boston University in the fifth annual Battle at Bethpage Sunday afternoon. Eleven Blue Devils tallied at least one point in the victory.

Duke improves to 12-4 overall and will await its next opponent in the NCAA selection show aired by ESPNU at 9 p.m. Boston University falls to 12-5 on the year.

Brad Smith chipped in a career-high four goals, while freshman Kevin Quigley notched his first career hat trick. Scoring their first career goals as Blue Devils were sophomore Cade Van Raaphorst , freshman Brian Smyth and junior David Gill

Guterding pushes his season points total to 82, making him just the sixth Blue Devil to record 80 points in a season. The 82 points are tied with Max Quinzani for No. 9 on the Duke single-season list and five behind No. 7 Jordan Wolf.

Duke, trailing 3-2 after consecutive goals from Boston University Jack Wilson, scored eight unanswered to open up an 11-3 advantage late in the second quarter. Seven different Blue Devils scored goals in the spurt, including the first from Van Raaphorst to tie the game 3-3. Van Raaphorst also added seven ground balls and two caused turnovers to his total.

Guterding keyed the 8-0 run with a pair of goals and three assists, while Smith had two. The Blue Devils, after falling behind with 6:17 left in the first quarter, scored five goals in span of 4:30 to extend their lead to 7-3 after 15 minutes.

The Blue Devils offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the second quarter as they added five more goals for the 12-4 halftime lead. Defensively, Duke held the Terriers without a goal for 21:02 to build the eight-goal advantage. Smyth capped the scoring for the Blue Devils in the first half, winning a faceoff and racing down for his first career goal.

Duke extended its lead to 15-5 in the third quarter and allows just four more goals in the final 30 minutes. The quartet of Kyle Rowe (14-of-16), Smyth (6-of-9), Thomas Palisi (2-of-2) and Teddy Henderson (1-of-2) dominated the faceoff X, winning 23-of-29 restarts. Rowe led all Blue Devils with eight ground balls. Duke finished the afternoon with a season-high 54 ground balls.

In goal, Danny Fowler played 49 minutes and made eight saves against six goals allowed. Turner Uppgren and David McCann played the final 11 minutes, combining for three saves. It marked the 10th time in the previous 12 outings Duke has held its opponents to under 10 goals.

Cal Dearth paced the Terriers offense with two goals and an assist for three points. Senior goalie Christian Carson-Banister was stellar between the pipes with 18 saves.

The opening round of the NCAA Tournament will be held next weekend either May 13 or May 14.
