ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With 18 holes remaining at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional, the third-seeded Duke women's golf team sits in fourth place following an even-par ledger of 288 Tuesday at the 6,637-yard, par 72 The Championship Course at the University of New Mexico.

After starting the day tied for sixth, the Blue Devils moved up two slots to fourth and improving their second round by nine strokes Tuesday.  Duke carded a 297 in round one followed by an even-par, 288, in round two.  The Blue Devils need to finish in the top six of the team standings to advance to the NCAA Championship, which will take place May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farm in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Stanford moved into the team lead with a five-under-par, 283, in the second round and holds a four-stroke lead over Pepperdine (577).  Southern California (580), Duke (585), California (586), Washington (587), Oklahoma State (590), Miami (591), Illinois (593), Campbell (595) and NC State (595) rounded out the top 10 teams.

The Blue Devils featured three golfers turning in one-under-par rounds of, 71, Tuesday to help register the even-par output.  Freshman Ana Belac, senior Sandy Choi and junior Leona Maguire all enter the final round in the top 20 of the individual leaderboard.  Stanford's Albane Valenzuela currently holds the individual lead with a four-under-par, 140, while Martina Edberg of CSU Fullerton is second at three-under-par, 141.

Belac has carded rounds of 73 and 71 for an even-par, 144, and is tied 10th as she is competing in her first NCAA regional.  A native of Portoroz, Slovenia, Belac opened her day by draining an eight-foot birdie on the 515-yard, par five first hole, but suffered a three-putt bogey on No. 2 and a bogey on No. 3 to drop back to one-over-par.   She sank a five-foot birdie on No. 5 to return to even par.  Belac went on to make the turn at one-over, 37, after a bogey on No. 9, but opened the back nine with a par and then back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes.  She suffered a bogey on No. 17, but hit her sand wedge from 70 yards to within a foot and tapped in for birdie to close the day.  Belac hit 11 greens, nine fairways and had 32 putts.

Over the first two days, Belac has rolled in nine birdies, which ranks tied for the lead along with NC State's Laura Kowohl.

The difference in Choi's first round of 75 and second round of 71 was her putting on Tuesday she went from 38 putts Monday to 28 putts in round two.  Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, owns a two-over-par, 146, and enters the final round tied 20th.  On Tuesday, Choi connected on her first birdie of the tournament as she drained a 12-foot birdie on the 378-yard, par four fifth hole and then featured an excellent sand save for par on No. 9 to make the turn with an one-under, 35.

Choi missed a short birdie opportunity on No. 14 and then suffered a double-bogey on No. 15 to drop back to one-over-par for the day.  She was able to finish strong though by sinking a seven-foot birdie on No. 17, before sticking her approach from 88 yards on No. 18 to less than a foot for birdie.  She hit 11 fairways and 11 greens as well.  Choi's 29 birdies over 36 holes in Albuquerque rank tied first.

“I am very proud of all of the girls, they stayed very patient,” said Choi.  “That was one word that coach told us to keep in mind throughout today's round.  Yesterday I know a lot of the girls were frustrated with their round because it could have been better.  The wind picked up yesterday, which resulted in some mistakes.  Today with better conditions everyone fought hard, stayed patient and had some good scores come in.”

Maguire, a product of Cavan, Ireland, turned in a team-high five birdies in the second round on her way to carding her 18th round of even or under par on the season.  She opened with a three-foot birdie on No. 1, but suffered just her fourth double-bogey or worse of the season on No. 2.  Maguire added a birdie on No. 6, but had her approach hit on the green on No. 7 and run off and went on to make bogey.  She responded with her third birdie of the front nine on the 178-yard, par three eighth hole as she hit her eight-iron from 141 yards to one.

After making the turn at even-par, 36, Maguire registered an eight-foot birdie on No. 12 to move back into the red numbers.  She added a bogey on the par five 14th, but stuck her approach to two feet on No. 15 for birdie.  Maguire finished the afternoon with three pars on her way to a 71.  She hit 12 fairways, 14 greens and had 29 putts.  Maguire had seven fewer putts from the day before.

Tuesday's round for sophomore Virginia Elena Carta came down to a matter of inches as the reigning NCAA Individual Champion just couldn't get putts to drop as she was burning the edges all day.  Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, had a bogey on No. 7, double-bogey on No. 10 and 16 pars.  She hit a team-best 16 greens Tuesday, but had 36 putts and hit only six fairways.  She enters the final round tied 38th with a 149.

Junior Lisa Maguire made up two strokes from the first round as she carded a five-over-par, 77, in the second round even though she was dealing with some sickness that started the night before.  Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, played her final eight holes at even par that included draining a 10-foot birdie on No. 13 and an eight-foot birdie on No. 14.  She hit nine fairways, 10 greens and had 33 putts during her round.

“As I just said to the team, Jon [Whithaus] and I didn't see any frustration at all from anybody and that was what we talked about going into it is just being extremely patient," said Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  "On a really good course that is this windy, things are not going to bounce the way you hoped all the time.  So we had a lot of patience out there, which was great.”

A day after shooting 10-over-par on the back nine, the Blue Devils turned in an one-under-par score Tuesday to help move up the scoreboard.

“We are in position to win, which is what we hoped to get to," said Brooks.  "We didn't have a great day yesterday, but we got ourselves back to where we are in a position to win it, so right where we like to be.”

Duke will tee off Wednesday in the third and final round beginning at 10:24 a.m. (ET), along with California and Washington.  The Blue Devils will be looking to advance to the NCAA Championship for the 22nd time out of the last 24 appearances.
