DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2016-17 Duke men's tennis team portion of the season completed, the Blue Devils shared their favorite moments from another exciting campaign. Duke advanced to the NCAA Team Championship and collected 16 victories and an 8-4 ACC ledger.
Here, members of the team recapped their favorite memories from the 2017 campaign.
Sophomore Ryan Dickerson - My favorite memory was the Notre Dame and Miami weekend. That was the first time my parents came out for a college match of mine, so I enjoyed spending time with them.
For those matches in particular, I felt the crowd support was the best it has ever been. Our fans were loud. I gained a lot of energy during my matches while playing in front of them.
Freshman Spencer Furman - My favorite memory from this year is when [senior] TJ [Pura] clinched the match against Florida State. It's my favorite moment because at the point in the season, we needed to pull an upset. That day, everything seemed to click for our team to jump out ahead 4-0.
Sophomore Jason Lapidus - My favorite memory this season was our run to end the season to make the NCAA Team Championship. Last year, we didn't qualify for NCAAs and that was tough for me. So to go on a nice run with our backs against the wall in the end of the ACC season was great.
Freshman Robert Levine - My best memory from the season was my first ACC singles win against Miami. That was a really big match as our team was starting to pick up a lot of momentum and put together a streak of wins.
It also helped us for when we played Miami again at the ACC Championship because we had beaten them so emphatically during the regular season.
Sophomore Catalin Mateas - My favorite memory from this season was definitely the Hawai'i trip at the beginning of the year. Having the whole team, coaches and support staff together in paradise was amazing.
Everyone got closer as a team and the activities we did were awesome. From paddle boarding to kayaking to the helicopter tour around the island, it was a trip filled with adventure and team bonding.
Senior TJ Pura - My favorite memory had to be my senior weekend with my whole family in town. Couple that with getting two big wins against Notre Dame and Miami, which really helped us get into the NCAA Team Championship, and it was great.
Freshman Nick Stachowiak - My favorite memory from this season would be beating Virginia Tech at Virginia Tech. It was the first ACC match of the year and the first ACC match ever for Spencer [Furman] and me. We went into Blacksburg and dominated all around winning 6-1.
Clinching the doubles point with Spencer and beating a top-50 player in the country in my first ACC match is something I will never forget.
Head coach Ramsey Smith - Our season this year centered around handling adversity. I am proud of how resilient we were throughout the spring. One moment in particular that stands out was during our Notre Dame match in Ambler [Tennis Stadium]. With three regular season matches left, we knew we had to win out to make the NCAA Tournament. Our backs were against the wall. We lost a painful doubles point, but had a great talk immediately after. All six singles players came out and showed nothing but positive energy and heart for two hours straight. We completely dominated singles, went on to win the match and finished the regular season extremely strong.
Associate head coach Jonathan Stokke - My favorite memory was our trip to Hawai'i. I'm so grateful that Greg and Jane Hills allow us to make the trip out there to bond as a team at the beginning of the year. It was an amazing experience and our players had a great time.
Volunteer coach Diego Garavito - My favorite memory from this season would be beating Florida State at home. The environment of the crowd was amazing. The fans definitely helped us to get the win. For the guys, I feel that specific match helped them gain confidence and the win gave us more belief to finish our stason strong. For me to be able to coach this team made it the best memory of any in my life.
The Blue Devils still are not finished with the year as Stachowiak and Furman will take part in this week's NCAA Doubles Tournament.
