INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The draws for the 2017 Men's Tennis NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships were released Tuesday with freshmen Spencer Furman and Nick Stachowiak set to compete in the first round of doubles play on Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Furman and Stachowiak, who are ranked No. 20 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, received an at-large bid to the event. The two open competition Thursday against [5-8 seed] Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat of California. Bergevi and Lakat are the No. 5 pair in the latest Oracle/ITA ledger.
Duke has a doubles pair at the NCAA main event for the first time since Nicolas Alvarez and Raphael Hemmeler in 2015.
The freshman pair of Furman and Stachowiak formed the Blue Devils' top doubles team, going 19-4 overall and 9-4 on court one. The tandem won its first 13 matches, the longest streak for a Duke pair since Henrique Cunha and Hemmeler won 16 straight from March 5 – May 16, 2013.
Furman and Stachowiak, who went 6-3 in ACC action, secured the doubles point in their first league match, downing Abraham Asaba and Jai Corbett of Virginia Tech 6-4 on court one. The two also gave Duke an early 1-0 lead against Florida State with a 6-4 win against No. 71 Dougaz and Guy Iradukunda, marking the pair's first doubles win versus a ranked duo. Furman and Stachowiak earned the highest-ranked doubles win of their careers versus No. 19 Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar of Notre Dame with 6-2 victory as Duke went on to upset the Fighting Irish 4-3. The Duke duo also picked up its third ranked win and clinched the doubles point with 6-4 triumph during the regular season against No. 40 Max Andrews and Jesse Flores of Miami.
