DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt sophomore quarterback Daniel Jones has been named to the preseason Davey O’Brien Award Watch List. The honor is presented annually to the nation’s top quarterback by the Davey O’Brien Foundation. The selection marks Jones’ first year on the preseason watch list.

Jones has already been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented to the college player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club. He has also earned a spot on Athlon Sports’ preseason All-ACC fourth team.

A 6-5, 215-pound Charlotte, N.C., product, Jones turned in an outstanding rookie campaign, starting all 12 games and completed 270-of-430 (.638) passes for 2,836 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions as well as a pass efficiency rating of 126.28. He also owns 141 rushes for 486 (3.45) yards and seven scores to compile 3,322 yards of total offense. During the course of the season, Jones established or matched 23 school records, including most total offensive yards by a freshman.

Jones owns career per game averages of 40.50 rushing yards, 236.33 passing yards and 276.83 total offensive yards. He became the first freshman to lead Duke in passing yards and total offensive yards since Thaddeus Lewis in 2006. Last fall Jones also became the second Blue Devil quarterback to post 16 or more passing scores and seven or more rushing TDs in a single season, joining Thomas Sirk (2015). Jones found his groove late in the season, tossing 10 touchdowns versus just one interception over the final seven weeks after throwing six touchdown passes and eight INTs through the first five weeks of the season.

Among active players in the ACC, Jones ranks second in passing yards per game, second in total offensive yards per game, fifth in total offensive yards, fifth in rushing yards by a quarterback, sixth in passing yards and seventh in touchdown passes.

Sixteen semifinalists for the award will be named on Tuesday, November 7. From that list, the Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce the three finalists on Monday, November 20. The 2017 Davey O’Brien Award winner will be announced live Thursday, December 7 on The Home Depot College Football Awards.

The 2017 season marks the 11th year that fans will be invited to participate in the voting process on VoteOBrien.org. Results from the Davey O’Brien Fan Vote will be combined with the ballots from the Selection Committee. Fan voting, which accounts for five percent of the total balloting, will begin on Tuesday, September 5.

Duke season tickets are available online at www.GoDuke.com/FootballTix or by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 919-681-2583.
