DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off its fifth trip to the NCAA quarterfinals or better in the last six years and with 10 starters returning, the Duke women’s soccer program was tabbed No. 12 in the preseason United Soccer Coaches (USC) top 25 rankings released Friday. The USC was formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

With the listing, the Blue Devils have now been preseason ranked in the top 20 nationally for the fifth time and top 15 for the fourth time over the last six seasons.

West Virginia, who the Blue Devils will face on Friday, Sept. 8 in Morgantown, was selected No. 1 overall, while Stanford, Southern California, South Carolina, Georgetown, North Carolina, Florida, BYU, UCLA and Auburn round out the top 10. A total of six ACC squads were in the top 25 – North Carolina (6), Virginia (11), Duke (12), Clemson (13), Florida State (15) and Notre Dame (18).

Duke returns 10 starters and a wealth of experience in 2017. The Blue Devils welcome back nine of their top 11 scorers from their 2016 squad, headlined by 2016 All-ACC selections Ella Stevens (10 goals) and Imani Dorsey (7 goals), as well as Taylor Racioppi (11 points in 11 matches).

Most of the defense that posted 11 shutouts last year comes back as well. Led by EJ Proctor, who was the 2015 NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Defense, other defensive stars back include preseason All-ACC selection Rebecca Quinn, Schuyler DeBree, Morgan Reid and Chelsea Burns.

The Blue Devils featured numerous injuries to key contributors a year ago and those standouts will be back in 2017 – Kayla McCoy, Quinn and Racioppi. Other returning letterwinners include Ashton Miller, Olivia Erlbeck, Casey Martinez, Mia Gyau, Mary Love Taylor, Lexi Magliarditi, Malinda Allen, Kat McDonald, Ana Munro, Emma Carlson, Mackenzie Coles and Emily Wilson.

Duke also welcomes one of the top recruiting classes in the nation along with redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brooke Heinsohn, who missed the 2016 campaign as she was playing with the U.S. U-20 women’s national team.

The 2017 preseason kicked off with practice Wednesday. Duke will open up play with an exhibition showdown at Clemson Friday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. The Blue Devils will then open the regular season in Chapel Hill for the UNC Nike Classic against North Carolina Friday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m.
