Duke Falls in Overtime Battle at North Carolina

CARY, N.C. – Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, the No. 12 Duke Blue Devils (0-1) fell in a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to No. 6 North Carolina Friday night in Cary, N.C.

Taylor Racioppi tallied the game’s first goal, nailing a one-timer off the assist from Ella Stevens in the 24th minute. North Carolina would answer nearly seven minutes later, as Joanna Boyles’ free kick hit the cross bar and bounced in to level the match at 1-1.

Duke would get one more shot off in the half, but the game would remain a tie heading into the break.

The second period provided excitement right off the bat, as both sides earned a number of corner kicks with the first 16 minutes of the half. It became a back-and-forth affair, which each squad having numerous chances to capture the lead. Duke reeled off three shots in the last minute of regulation, forcing UNC’s Samantha Leshnak to make a pair of saves to keep things equal and force overtime.

UNC earned a corner kick nearly three minutes into the overtime period and would capitalize on a header goal from Jessie Scarpa just nine seconds later to seal at 2-1 win.

The Blue Devils won the shot battle, taking 15 to North Carolina’s 10, while tallying seven of those on goal. Only four of the Tar Heels’ shots were on target. A total of 16 Blue Devils took the field on the night, including three freshmen that made their collegiate debut (Taylor Mitchell, Natasha Turner and Remi Swartz). EJ Proctor made the start in goal for the Blue Devils, tallying a pair of saves. 

Duke returns to action Sunday, Aug. 20, as it hosts Xavier in a 1 p.m. matchup at Koskinen Stadium. Admission for the 2017 home opener is free.
