DURHAM, N.C. - A penalty kick goal from junior Chelsea Burns provided the game-winning tally Sunday as the Duke women’s soccer program (1-1) picked up its first victory of the season with a 3-1 triumph against Xavier (1-1).

The contest was tied 1-1 until the 74th minute, when Ella Stevens was taken down in the box, setting up the penalty strike from Burns that would be the match’s decisive goal.

“First, I’ll give Xavier credit. They came down here and were very organized,” head coach Robbie Church said. “We dominated the game and had the ball a lot. We missed some chances and we have to continue to work on that. This weekend has given two really good games that we can break down and see some things that we did really well and some areas that we have to do better in.”

The Musketeers struck first as Tori Doss slotted the first goal in the 14th minute. Duke evened the contest at 1-1 at the 16:17 mark, when junior Kayla McCoy converted on a strike past the keeper on the left side after a pass from Taylor Racioppi.

After the giving up the early goal, the Blue Devils turned the pressure on their visiting foes, tallying 13 shots in the first half and 10 in the second. Of their 23 total shots on the day, 13 were on goal, with Xavier’s Toni Bizzarro making 10 total saves.

The final nail in the coffin came with just 20 seconds remaining in the contest, as senior Imani Dorsey completed a run from midfield to the left side to send home the game's final goal.

Making the first start in goal of her career, Duke keeper Brooke Heinsohn only allowed one goal on two shots en route to her first-career victory. The redshirt freshman missed the 2016 season due to action with the U.S. U-20 National Team.

Duke returns to action Friday, when it hosts Bucknell for a 2 p.m. match at Koskinen Stadium. Fans can purchase tickets by going to or contacting the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at (919) 681-BLUE (2583) or calling (877) 375-3853. Those unable to make their way to Koskinen can catch the action on ACC Network Extra through or the ESPN app.
