DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe announced Saturday the naming of Austin Davis, Bryon Fields Jr., Daniel Jones and Mike Ramsay as team captains for the 2017 season. The four returning lettermen were elected by their teammates.
Davis, a 6-4, 290-pound redshirt senior center from Mansfield, Texas, started all 12 games for the Blue Devils last season and is a candidate for this year’s Rimington Trophy, an honor presented annually to the nation’s top center. In addition, he received preseason All-ACC honors from both Athlon Sports (2nd team) and Phil Steele’s College Football Preview (4th team).
Fields Jr., a 5-11, 185-pound redshirt senior cornerback from Charlotte, N.C., has seen action in 39 career games with 26 starting assignments and compiled 142 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 quarterback sack, three interceptions, 14 pass breakups, two caused fumbles and one fumble recovery. In addition, the three-time Academic All-ACC honoree in one of four active players in the ACC with multiple interception returns for touchdowns.
Jones, a 6-5, 215-pound redshirt sophomore quarterback from Charlotte, N.C., enters his second season as Duke’s signal-caller after completing 270-of-430 (.638) passes for 2,836 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions a season ago. He added 486 rushing yards and seven ground touchdowns in 2016 and earned Freshman All-America and the team’s Most Valuable Player honors.
Ramsay, a 6-2, 290-pound redshirt senior defensive tackle from Smyrna, Ga., has played in 38 career games with 16 starting assignments and amassed 64 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 quarterback sacks and three quarterback pressures. Duke’s lone returning starter along the defensive front for 2017, Ramsay enters his final season having played 1,092 career snaps for the Blue Devils.
