NORFOLK, Va. – Behind a trio of goals, the No. 12 Duke Blue Devils (3-1-0) took down the Old Dominion Monarchs (2-2-0), 3-1, in a Sunday afternoon road contest.
With the win, the Blue Devils have now reeled off three-straight victories, taking down Xavier and Bucknell before Sunday’s win.
Imani Dorsey drew a penalty 15 minutes into the match, giving way to Chelsea Burns, who for the third-straight match buried her penalty attempt as the Blue Devils gained a 1-0 advantage. Just six minutes later Kayla McCoy would put her name on the scoring summary, burying a shot from the left into the right side of the box to put the Devils up 2-0.
The Blue Devils kept the hits coming in the second half, as Dorsey made a spectacular breakaway and won a one-on-one with the keeper in the 62nd minute of play to give Duke a 3-0 lead. The home squad would get one back 20 minutes later, as ODU’s Kyra Ricks lobbed one into the goal to cut Duke’s lead to two.
Despite being down two, ODU kept pressing in search for the two scores needed to equalize. However, the Duke defense would hold strong to keep the Monarchs at bay and secure the 3-1 decision.
EJ Proctor recorded the win to move to 2-1-0 on the year, playing the entire 90 minutes between the posts in Sunday’s victory.
Duke dominated on the stat sheet, outshooting the Monarchs, 16-2, with half of those coming on goal. The Blue Devils put major pressure on the Monarchs in the second half, recording 12 of their shots in the last 45.
The Blue Devils will now return home to host UNC Wilmington and Auburn in the Duke Nike Classic. Duke faces UNCW Friday, Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by a Sunday, Sept. 3 contest against Auburn at 2 p.m. Fans looking to attend can purchase tickets by contacting the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at (919) 681-BLUE (2583), calling (877) 375-3853 or visiting GoDuke.com/tickets.
