FLUSHING, N.Y. - In her first match of the US Open Juniors tournament, freshman Kelly Chen advanced with a straight sets victory, dropping Monica Cappelletti 6-2, 7-6 on Monday afternoon.
Chen used three break points in the first set to earn a comfortable 6-2 win. Cappelletti started the second set strong, hoping to force a decisive third set. However, after trailing 3-0 early, Chen battled back and eventually forced a tiebreaker, where she won 7-4 to close out the victory.
Chen will advance to play Xin Yu Wang of China in the second round. Wang is the sixth seed in the tournament and reached the second round with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win over Mahak Jain. The pair will be the fourth and final match of the day on Court 17.
