FLUSHING, N.Y. – After trailing by a set, freshman Kelly Chen rallied to win the final two sets to drop sixth seeded Xin Yu Wang 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the US Open Juniors tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
After a straight sets win in the opening round, Chen dropped her first set of the tournament as Wang took an early 1-0 lead. The second set was knotted at five games apiece, but Chen won the final two to force the third set.
“In the first set I was just trying to get adjusted to her pace,” said Chen. “I didn’t feel bad after losing the first set, I just concentrated on serving better.”
In the final set, Chen faced an early 3-0 deficit, but won four straight games to regain the lead. From there, the Cerritos, Calif. native pulled away to win the third set 6-4 and advance to the round of 16.
“I just concentrated on winning one game and then another game.” Chen said.
Chen’s next opponent will be Emiliana Arango from Colombia. Arango reached the round of 16 with wins over Layne Sleeth and Alina Charaeva. Chen and Arango will have a day off before meeting on Thursday.
